"In, 'this salutary light—
(Christ)-14oie- npon the , : world, the
most persevelpg efforts
,of the learned
have not been' - 'able fully to ascertain.—
Nor will, this surprise us, if we consider
that the earliest Christians knew not the
day of their Saviour's birth, and judged
differently en the subject. But oftwhat
cernietineace is it that we know not the
year. or, - day when this light first shone,
since we fully know that it has appeared ?
Most of the opinions of the learned, con
cerning the year of Christ's birth, are col
lected by J A. -Fabricius,, Bibliographia
Antiquar, cap. vii , p. 187.
"The-birth of Christ was first made an
era, from which to reckon dates, by' Di
onyritisiErigeus, about A.D. 532. He sup
posed Christ to have been born in the
year of Rome 763, and this computation
hag been followed in practice to this day,
notwithstanding the learned are well
agreed that it is incorrect. To ascertain
the true - time of .Christ's birth, there are
two.priucipal data afforded by the Evan
gelists. Ist. It is clear from Matthew,.2,
lst v., tbc.,• that Christ was born before
the'death of Herod the Great, who died
about Easter in, the year of Rome 749 or
750, (see Eardner, Part Ist., Vol. 2d, app.)
Nowifehrist was born in the December
next before Herod's death, it, must have
been in the year of Rome 749, and of
course fOur, if not five years anterior to
the Diouyeian, or vulgar era. 2d. It is
probable from Luke 34-Iv., 2v., 23v.,
that Jeans was about 30 years of age in the
15th year of the reig n of Tiberius Ctesar.
Now the .reign of Tiberius may be con
sidered as commencing at the time he be
came sole Emperor, in August of the year
of Home 767, or (as there is some reason
to seppose that Aug,ustus made hiw part
ner in . the government two years before
be died.) we may begin his reign in the
year of Rome 765. The 15th year of
i fiberius will therefore be either the
year einem° .781 or 779, from which to
dedact. 30, and we have.the .year of Rome
75.1 0F749,, for Christ's birth. The ; former
two ye:soli - and the hitter four yearn earli
er thau. the Dionysian Cotuptitatior.' CT*
paring the-reit:as- with thoie- obtained
from the death of Herod, it is generally
supposed the true dine of Christ's birth
was the year of Rome 749, or four years
before the vulgar era. Butethe conclusion
is not certain, because there is uncertain
ty in the data. (I.) It is not certain that
wo ought to reckon Tiberius' reign as be
,
gioning two years before the death of
Aufzustus. (2.) Luke says about 30 years
of ags. This is indefinite, and may be un
der.lood as 29, 30, or 31 years. (3.) It
is not certain in which of the two years
mrnlinned, Herod died; nor how long be
fore thatevent Christ .was born. h •up
ears very evident that Herod did not
now the precise time of Christ's birth,
therefore he slew all the children that
were in Bethlehem and in all tile coasts
thereof, from two: years old and.under. (See
Mat. ii -16.) .
"In relation to the month •and day •of
the Saviour's birth, we are left almost
wholly to conjecture. The disagreetuent

discovered the dead body of a man named
Scott, and , well known in, that neighbor

When distiovered the body was greatly

a wild beast. It is not known how he
came tobis death, but as his ride and am
