The Dettoit Free Press of Monday
makes the following statement
On the,l9th of May last, Mr. Alexan.
der H. Jennison, of Niagara County, N.
Y., was arrested in this city and taken to
the guard-house at the barracks. Ho was
in this city on business; and on the after
noon of the 19th of May, as he was walk=:
ing along the street, an officer tapped him
upon the shoulder and invitedliitalci - go
to the provost. From here beiris4kmi

gtailied.4o go 40 hia "hotel ar any place
for the purpose of being fidenti • ed,^ er eat- -
isfying all parties interestedltf,bielOya4
to the government. No were
made against him, and he will not inform
ed of the .cause his arreat,;altbough be=
demanded 6o know the eaten.'
A portion of the elate - that - lie remained
at the barrackif he was &soli confined in
a most filthy liOle with the worst trimin 7
els. His money and all his "effects were
taken away itom him ; he was not allowed
to have food furnished him from thelout
side, and was not permitted to communi
cate with any of his friends. Something
more than a week ago he was taken from
the barracks to the House of Correction,
where he was closely confined in a cell
and compelled to live on prison diet. Yes
terday afternoon about half-past five o'-
clock, Mt., Brockway, Superintendent of
the House of Correction, called him from
his cell into the office of the prison, and
told him that he was free to go. here
was no papers, no officers, no explimation
of the cause of his arrest and detention.
He was simply told to go, and up to
this moment he has never been told why
he was arrested, nor were there any char
ges made against him, nor any trial. He
does not know why he was arrested, why
he was detained in close confinement for
a month or more, nor why he was finally
discharged. The above statement of facts
is brief, but there is food for much serious
ness and candor. Is not the iron heel of
a worse than Austrian despotism upon
the necks of American citizens ?

MinorEn, Pa., Feb. 16, 1659,
Dear Sire :—Having realized in my fatally important
benefits from the use of your valuable preparation—
Wilder's Balsam of Wild Cherry—it affords me pleasure
to recommend it to thepublic. Some eight years ago
one of ray daughters seemed to be in a decline, and little
hopes of her recovery were entertained. I then pro
cored a bottle of your excellent BaLsam, and befere she
hadlaken the whole of the contents of the bottle there
was a great improvement in her health. I have, in my
individual case, made frequent nse Of your valuable
medic - inn, andhave 'always been benefitted by It.
JACOB SECHLBIL
Prom Jessie Smith, Esq. President of the Morris Coun

" Having used Dr. Wistar's Balsam of Wild CheM for
about fifteen years, and having realized its breecial
results in my family, it affords me g. rest pleasure to re
commend It to the public as *valuable remedy In cases
of weak lenge, colds, couths, d.., and a remedy which
I consider. to be entirely innocent, and may be taken in
perfect safety by the most delicate in health.
Prom Hon. John E. Smith. a Zintintaished lawyer in
Westminster, Md.
I here cm several occasions used Dr. Wiatar's Balsam
of Wild Cherry Mr colds, and always with decided bene
fit. I know of no preparation that is more efilcaciont or
more deserving of general use.
The Balsam tow also been used witb excellent effect
by J. B. Elllott,Plercbant, Hall's Cross Bcadiclid.
