IN REPORT OF AUIS B. A. , COON.
BY G. W. LYONS
Death came with sable beating,
Oh! loved one, in thy bloom,
His robes about thee wearing,
In folds of shrouded gloom,
And whisperedlow and deep,
And left upon thy cheek
The impress of the tomb.
Palejoruas7o7er thee were bending, ;'t
Bt;ic4n and Weary,. worn,
And bleeding hearts. wariiendingi
With deepest anguish torn
_;
But death what power *Stay,
Or .bend lue.ruthtees sway`?
7_ Alas, lieieft to mourn?
Ited 'lath hi ever draping
The brightest hours with woe,
And to his bot3ona taking
Flowers that fairest grow,
To seal their sacred trust,
And moulder, back to dust,
Their beauty, dark and low.
When think we thou art sleeping
In earth's chill, narrow bed,
How, rushes sorrow, weeping
Tears, for bereavement shed,
While the stars in silence deep,
Their eternal watches keep,
Above thy pillowed head.
But though the grave is shading
Thy fair and youthful brow,
And in his mansions fading
Its brightness, even now,
Thy spirit, freed and light, -
Has winged its joyous flight,
Where blessed angels bow.
Akur oh ! the raptures swelling
In that celestial land,
Immortal glories telling
From that seraphic band!
When mortal vision wanes,
How sweekto catch the strains,
And press thy angel hand!
Ilsamat, May 20, 1864.
The Woznen'e Gemii4tt.
It is amusing to see the organs of the
New England manufacturers swelling the
cry against imported fabrics.' At a meet
ing oisie ladies of New York, got up to
echo the Washington demonstration, sam
ples of dress goods from Manchester # 'N.
R., were exhibited; and examined r by the
fair Covenanters. Rich silks, of Hartford
manufacture, are also advertised for the
use of those martyrs in brocade. These
false economists propose to buy in the
dearest market, instead of the Cheapest,
and call it patriotism ! They ostentatious
ly copy the movement of 1770, intended
to deprive the government of revenue
and to cripple it. So infatuated were
these women, that they voted down the
following resohttion, which militated S
gainst their estrava,„(Tant idea of
portation ! It was offered by Dr. Adams:
" We, the• undersigned, during the con
tinuance of this war of rebellion, pledge
ourselves, in the exercise of our best judg
ment, to regulate our personal and domes
tic expenses with special reference to e
conomy and the resources of the coun
try."
We are told that such a crowd of car
riages as bore these fashionable dames to
the meeting, was never paralleled. They
never thought of giving the horses and
_coachmen and footmen to the war ! No;
the talk was all " dress," and the adroit
dodge of non-importation means 50 per
cent. more to, the New England monopo
lists. Let the women of the country o.
conomise. Let them make sacrifices. Let
them give their jewels to the country, as
did the ladies of Berlin, and - use iron orn
aments instead I But let it be a real econ
omy instead of a false one. Let them
buy clothes, and all other things where
they can be got cheapest ; and ; Jat them
stop talking eternally about their dress.

Mr.lllatifin, of this - State, offered a re
solution in Congress, to the effect that, as
bad been deolared.by Congress in 1861,
the war, was conducted not for the pur
pose of oullingation or .conquest, but:to
restore the supremacy of 410 Constitution
and the Union. '
On motion of Mr. Meyers, an Abolition
member, this resolution was laid on the
table by'a vote of 73 yeas to 53 nays.—
Now, if the war is not carried oafor the
restoration of the Union, we would like our
Abolition ,friends to tellthe people what
they are spilling their blood and spending
their treasure for ? Let it • = remember

Spiritual table talk by rapping is
apt to lead to serious enabarrassments, as
shown in the following instance: A party
met the other night and formed a chain,
and when the "fluid" was in movement, a
married lady present put the question,
"How many children have I? " - Four
raps were given, to indicate the number.
Presently her husband came in and asked
the Same question. Two, was the prompt
reply. The effect may be Imagined, but

VW - Scone of the republican papers say
that Lincoln is to blame for the disasters
in the Southwest, , and that he ordered
Banks there at the instigation of cotton
speculators. We think that this is very
probable. Lincoln was certainty to blame
for the Florida disaster, and be no doubt
ventilated another of his little plans in the
fatal Red river affair.
ilarThe Treasury Investigating Com
mittee are holding daily sessions. They
have examined a large number of witness
es, among them several respectable wom
en, who fully substantiate every charge
contained in the affidavits of women em
ployed in the currency bureau. The irre
sponsible-and loose manner of printing
legal tender notes and bonds, and postal
or friahmal currency, is clearly proven.
Prodigious efforts are being made,both
in the committee and outside, to cover up
and whitewash the matter.
