•
Citizens of Montrose who allow their
fowls, dogs, etc., to visit their neighbors'
gardens should remember that they—the
dogs and fowls—are liable to come to
grief and an early grave, " according to
iaw." Also that COWS are prohibited
from running at large in any street or
road at any time by a State law, in addi
tion to the Borough Ordinance.
Elder Bush.
One of our exchange newspapers says
insects never touch the elder bush. The
leaves of the elder, scattered over cucum
bers, cabbage, squashes, and other plants
subject to the ravages of insects, effectu
ally shields them. The plum and other
fruits may be saved by placing on the
branches and through them, bunches of
elder leaves.
It is said that ants will not come about
where elder leaves are scattered. This is
easily tried ; and if successful, of great im
portance.
A Strike s and Shooting Affray.
Monday and Tuesday of this (now last)
week the workmen upon the new Shop,
at Susq'a Depot, and in the quarry, were
on a strike for higher wages. Their de
mands; we understand, were granted, and
all is now brisk again.
During the strike a sort of riot occurred.
A man was engaged at work, and the
crowd of strikers gathering around him,
his cousin attempted to protect him, but
was stoned and driven back some distance,
when he drew a revolver and shot one;of
the strikers in the breast. Upon this the
strikers rushed towards him in a body,
crying for vengeance, but by the interpo
posit ion of the citizens he was taken into
custody, and his life saved.
The injured man, we learn, is fast re
covering from the effects of the shot.—N.

ChIEICBI 2 IVILIEL 1.
MUD 3LkNUFACTURE OF WOOLEN GOODS, both
• 1 in the household and the factories., has become of
great importance on account of Reforming at present
our principal article - of clothing. The nature of our cli
mate makes it necessary, and the scarcity of Cotton has
greatly increased the value of wool and fabrics made
from ft; and being engaged in the business of making
Cloth and Flannel, and also Roll Carding, and Cloth
pressing, we have thought that a few remarks with re
gard to handling Wool, and the proper process of menu
facture, might boot service:to the country, ands bene
fit to ourselves.
The Bret process with the farmer ado intends to make
his wool into rolls for spinning and weaving at :home,
after washing and shearing, Is assorting the qualities.
this we do not expects farmer to do as perfectly as a
regular manufacturer, but by trying he will appro xi mate
towards It, and be amply paid for the little pains re
quired, by having an even thread and smoother fabric.
The fleeces - should be whole and should be spread out
on a table—the coarsest wool will be found on
the skirts of the fleece, and can easily be distinguished
by looking closely to the fibre. Two qualities from each
fleece will perhaps be close enough for ordinary purpos
es;but as the sheep in our country differ much in their
grades of wool—the coarse part of one may do to go
with the finer part of another,_ and thus make three or
four qualities out of the lot. If It is going to the manu
factory or to market, the fleece should not be torn, but
sites removing the tag-locks, should be rolled up com
pactly. skin side out. Not less than one pound of lard,
fresh butter or oil should be sent with every ten pounds
of wool going to the carding machine.
The next thing of importance is of course to be well
carded, for which we will be entirely responsible; but in
the matter of spinning_ and weaving, we have another
caution to add. Unless the yarn Is evenly twisted, and
beat up arenly in the loom, the cloth shrinks unevenly
In falling—making some places wide and others nar
row. andlf the finisher succeeds in pressing out the
wrinkles, the cloth svFll resume its contortions Algaitt!
when nand° Into a garment, and the mechanic is some
timeswrongfnilyblamed for a coat's becoming lantern
jawed on a man's back: It is easily avoided by giving
the wheel an equal mother of turns to a given length of
thread drawn-out. We find this dilneulty increased of
late years, and have come to the conclusion that if some
of the spinners do not keep better time on their pianos
than on their spinningg wheels, tve should bate dreadful
ly to listen to their naftle.; - -- •
