with Cumberland Gap cut off. The most
significant news, however, is the report of
citizens 'frerri t the 'Rebel lines., • who say
that Longstreet is expecting to be rein
forced from Johnston s army. It is 'evi
dent that the Rebels are making a bold
and desperate effort t' regain a foothold
in East .Tennessee, and Knoxville is at
present the point of attack. What the
present condition of our forces tiro we are
not informed, but it will require all the
bravery of our men and the _skill et our
Generalsto.counteract this sudden move
