Wuo is HE 2—On the field of Gettys
lmrg, after tile-battles, the Alma bay of a
Union soldier was found, behrifig in his
clasped hands an, ambrotype picture of
three children, a girl and two.boys, aged
apparently about nine, seven., and five
years.. In the picture, the youngest child,
a boy, is seated in a high chair, : betWeen
his elder 'brother and his sister, while the
dresses of the two latter are, made of the
same material. The soldier was buried
on the field where ho fell, and his grave is
marked, but his name could not be ascer
tained. It is- hoped, however, that he
may yet be identified by means of the am
brotypeof the children foundin his hands
when his body was discovered., The pie.
ture is now in possession of .Dr. Bourns,
1104 Spring Garden streer,'Philadelpl49,
who can be called upon or addressed ua,

' If t
• ny Democratic press should now, in
I view of the last proclamation . , announce
that the suecess of their*arty ;n the emit !
ins PreSidential election was of much
greater tmportattanbas witminglileteries
in the - field, or that ifeTn'tter.ats 104 better
remain to' put down the unitlid`ed• - foes 'of
,the, Governtnent at home than the armed
enemy atiread, we should doubtlessi hear,
in-no whispering tones, cries of "Treason!"
" away with the traitor !" etc. Yet why,
should-such 'expressions be more treason
able by the'Democratic than by the Re
pub. party? r Why is it permissible for the
republican party, on that grpund, to send
m e n home from the army and not permis
sible for the Democrats Co-retain me 9 from
going to the army? Why is.it right for
Republicans to'permit .leatie'S arMy and
Wastingtoff to be endangered and Penn
sylvania menaced, and wrong for peinp
erats to refuse their'arms to rivet on their
,own ebains? The object of both is• the
same:---vit, votes. But the Republican
plan cuts both ways; fop, having get the
'Republican and Democratic soldier, the
former is allowed to come' honie and vete,
whilst the latter is prevented. Each in
such case as this, gives two votes to the
;Republicans—the vote they put in the
box, and the vote they keep out of the
box. It creates Republican majorities by
increasing their own at the Bomb tinie di
minishing Democratic ballots. When 'the
rare ease happens of: Republican voter
going to the wars, his party loses nothing,
because he comes back. to %'ote. When a
Dernocratie soldier *goes, his party loses
his vote.
In view Of these obvious truths, which
cannot but haVe their effect' upon the vol
unteering of the Democracy, what is' the
duty of the,Administration ? It is
Ylt
,once to give the country an assurance
that at no future election .will soldiers, be
permitted to leave their 'regiments for
voting purposes, or that, if any are allowed
to go. no selectiOn shall be made of Mends
'of the Administration, but that all shall
t:•6 treated alike. If this be done—if the
Democracy of the country can have any
assurance that their absence from elec
tions, fighting their country's battles, shall
not be taken advantage, of as a means of
defrauding their friends and putting rul
ers over them that they detest, we doubt
not that they will answer, as they have
hitherto too confidingly done, to the call
of the President.
