We have discredited all of these stories
as put forward ; and though in some ea:
ses we have bad localities, names and cit. ! .
eumstances testified-to under • oath , before
civil tribunals, we have alsiaystound that
the evidence, upoe'elose reading, failed ttei
bear out the inferences drawn -from it.
The , testimony .generallY was akin' in
character`to that of those ereckbrains
who have sworn that they saw, scores of
sheeted ghosts dancing in '.agraveyard by
moonlight, while the truth was that they
only saw a white raghanging:, on a wil
low or cypress bough. The Cinoinnati
Enquirer, the chief Democratic= organ in
thallortb*est, and which• is, thoroughly;
informed' on all political, social and mili
tary matters in that section, replies to an
accusation that K. G. C. lodgeshave been
set up in the towns and villages of most
of the Western 'and Northwestern States,
by-asserting that there is. not in any
Western or Northwestern State a single
K. G. C. lodge. The charge that there
is, is a lie made out of whole - cloth. No
such lodge and no persons: belonging to
them have ever been found; imply be
cause they do not exist." The ,truth of
this need not be doubted, and we are glad
to believe it; for we have troiibles enough
in the South, without raising fictitious
troubles in the. North to distract the putt
lie mind and undermine public confi
