England, limiting the Oregon *Territory

England had no - rights on that coast, and
that the United States shimld never reeog
)A., her claim. lie opposed Abe treaty of
peace with Mexico, on the "ground that
the bOundaries were unnatural and
ven lent,. and that the provisions in regard
to the Indians could never. he executed. I
The United States have since paid Mexico
. 10,000,000 to changs the boundaries
and relinquish tine stipulations in regard
. to the Indians. He opposed the ratilica
tiotkof the Clayton andßul wet. treaty and
endeavored to procure its rejectioty upon
the ground, among other things, that it
pledged the fititil of the United States in
ill tiine to come never to annex, colonize
or exerc'se dominion over :my portion of
central America, -
lie declared that he did not desire to
annex that conntry at that time, but main- .
.tained that. the Isthmus routes. must be
I.ept open as highways to the American
possessions On the Pacific, that the tune
• would come when the United • States
would be compelled to occupy Central
America, and that he would never pledge
the frith of the Republic not to do pp the
• future in respect to this continent what
its interests and safety might require.
