Yon see, Jonathan, that you are leader

Spotsdown choir, and your sister , is.

gals in general, all over the village, think

and entirelydone I to. We shall haveto shut

-laughed and snickered at by all the gals
in town, and finally dray cdto fothi3x side
of sun down, or somewher else."
"Jess so," says I;' "and I motion woo
don't stand it."
"Second that motion," said he. "Ent
how in thunder are we going to help it?"
"Don't know es we Vall i " says I;- but'
we can try; I've got a plan tn my head."„
"Sich as what?" said he.'
"Sich," said I, "if it works woll, as will
kick up a muss in our choir, and kick the
mowsto oat on't the same time. These
chaps- with the instruments, you knelt - ,
can't speak much English." ,
"And can't read any," said he.
" That'djust the idea," says I, that's go

"How !" say Zeke. •
"Wait till to-morrow mornin' and vou'l

"Sartin I do." •
"And find the tunes in the psalm hook?"
"Eggsietly," says he.
"And give them Out to the singers?"
• "Yes," sayi he. •
• "And these ere chaps can't Tend_ any
English?"
" Not a smudgeon," said he. •
Nuff sed Zeke. Wait till the first
hymn is gin out tA-morrow morning.",
Well, the next morning came as. was
expected, and it wassme of them ere kind'
of summer mornings you generally read
about. The sun nz in all his glory at half
past four o'clock, and at ten, • when the
meetiebegan, it was hot enough to boil
eggs in the shade. A Jong time before
the second bell rung, the 'motile house
was crowded ram jam full. All the choir
was, there and the form musiciOners be
sides. Wall, about a quarter after ten, in
come the minister, and a Olagnav genteel,
stiff-lookin' sort.cif a chap tow. - He walk=
though
up the broad aisle, into the pulpit, as
though be owned the meetin' house and
everybody in it. Soon as he got there he
hemmed and fia'w - ed
,a little, blowed his.
nose a g?eat deal, took up the hymn book
and said—
The choir will sing e if they please ' the
two hundred thirty-third limn, short,.par
, ticular metre; hymn two hundred thirty
three."
Then he read the hymn in a sort of silk
and worsted kind of voice, as soft as soak
ed saw-dust. Whilst he was doing this
I picked out thg tune, and it took two of
them to sing that tune with me now 'I tell
von. r picked out a long metro tune ftsr
the singers. Then we all "stood up to sing,
instruments in front'. Jest before we be. ,
gun, I whispered to Sal 'and Zeke Jones,
and se".
I—
« Put in all you know," find you'd bet
ter believe they did it. Wall,' I led off
the singin' double quick time,- so that we
got tlitough the first stanza atOre the .mn
bicianers had played half their tune out..
Howsomever they kept on playing while
we stopped to breathe, and then the con
gregation -began to snicker, and . the mill-
ister's face looked like a niammonth spec
imen of blood beet cut in halves. I wait
edspatiently for the music to stop, and ar
ter a while it did.
_Then' we was just a
goirt' to sing again - , when the Italian chap,
the big fiddler, von know, walks up to
me, shakes his bow in my face, and says—, '
• "You much diabols, you—vat yon.
—spile - de mewsicke. 'Spose a you do it
again, 'ver much I spile your head." .
"Yon will hey ?" says 1.. "Then I guess
Pll spite yours, in adVance." •
Then upwith my fist without.. any.
more ariew, and planted it-under Mr. Vin
egar's left ear. 'Very directly, of course;
he fell, and our Sal being in the,. way, like
a tarnal fool, he struck smack agiri her,
and she fell too.. Then Mr. Sledgehammer,
the German 'man, hit me from behirnt an
awful louder on the back ,of the head.
Zeke Jones hit him at the same time and
place, the rest of the male singers rushing
fOrward to put in foir a 'share, tumbling
over us as we all lay prostrate on the floor,
and of course there was a very beantifed
and g - e aeral muss all around the choir.
Then smite-of the gals sung out -"mur-
der!" . some.of 'em "tire!" mid some of 'em
"halfeletjahl" Some of the congregation;
too, sung ont "call the constable!' sail
or chap in the gallery sung out "call the
watch I"—one of the deacons ran up into
the pulpit, and the minister thinkin' he
was cumin' to killlim, shied the big .liible
at the deacon's -head, and then jumped
'pact the pulpit window. •
In the meantime Sal pulled all the stash
ers off the Italian's-face, and takin-me for,
- the German violinist, slapped my chops
most tremendously. .
Then both of the k mnsicianers got up
and Zeke Jones - and kicked' em out of
the meetin house, ima the congregation
kicked uF out arter 'ein. Sal got her bran
newkalliker delane torn-all to smash.
. • The sexton ,shah. up the meetin louse,
• and there aint beeit -any preachin nor es
pecially singin of any consequence there
: since, and that amt all, Frlont think there
ever will be. The muss in our choir was

HOSTETTER'S
STOMACH BITTERS'
The proprietors and 'manufacturers of HOS
TETTER'S ,CELEBRATED STOMACH BIT
TERS can appeal with perfect confidence to
physicians and citizens generilly of the Jnitod
States, because the article has attained &repu
tation heretofore unknown. A few facts upon
this point will speak more powerfully than
volumes of bare assertion or blazoning puffer.
The consumption - of Hostetter's Stomach —Bity
tors for the last year amounted to over a half
million bottles, and from its manifest steady
increase in times past, it is evident that during
the coming year the consumption will reach
neartme million bottles. This immense amount
could never have been sold but for the rare
medicinal properties contained in theprepara
tion, and the sanction of the, most prominent
physicians in those sections of the country
where the article ie best known, who not only
recommend the Bitters to-their patients,' but
are ready at all times' to give testimonials to its
efficacy in all cases of stomachic derangements
and the disetises resulting therefrom.
sit This is not a temporary popularity, obtained
by extraordinary efforts in the way of trum
peting the qualities of the Bitters, but a solid.
estimation of an invaluable medicine, which is
destined.tobe as enduring as time itself.
Hostetter's Stomach Bitters have proved
a Godsend to regions where fever and ague
and various, other bilious complaint's have
counted their victims by hundreds. ' To - be
able to state confidently that the "Bitters"
are a certain cure for the Dyspepsia and. like
diseases, is to the proprietors a source of un
alloyed pleasure. It removes all morbid matter
'from r ile stomach, - purifies the blood, and
, imparts renewed vitality to t o nervous system,
_ giving it that tone and'en gy indispensable
for the:restoration of health. It operates upon
thultomach, liver, and other digestive organs,
mMly but power fully, and soon restores them
to *condition essential to the healthy discharge
of the funothins of nature.
-.Elderly persons may use the Bitters daily as
per directions on the bottle, and they will find
in it a stimulant peculiarly adapted to comfort
declining years, as it is pleasant to the palate,
invigorating to the bowels, excellent as a tonic,
and rejuvenating generally. We have the evi-
donee of thousands.of aged men and women
who have experienced the benefit of using this
preparation while suffering from stomach de- •
rangeinents and general debility; acting under
the advice of physicians, they have abandoned
all deleterious drugs • and fairly tested the
merits of this article. A few words to the
gentler sex. There are certain periods when
their cares are so harassing that many of them
sink under the trill. The relation of mother
and child is ,so absorbingly tinder, that the
mother, especially if- eke be young, is apt to
forget her. own health in her extreme anxiety
for her infant. Should the period of maternity
arrive during the summer season, the wear of
body grid mind is generally aggravated. Here,
then, is a necessity for a stimulant to recupe
rate the energies cf the system, and enable the
mother to bear up under her exhausting trials
and 'responsibilities. Nursing mothers gene
rally prefer the Bitters: to all other invigora
tors that receive the endorsement of physi
cians, because it is_ agreeable to the taste as
well as certain to give ti permanent , increase
.of bodily strength.
All those persons, to whom we have particu
larly referred above, to wit: sufferers from
fever and ague, caused by malaria, diarrhoea,
dysentery, indigestion, loss of appetite, and
,all diseases or derangements of the stomach,
superannutited invalids, persons of sedentary
occupation, and nursing mothers, will consult
their own physical welfare by' giving to Hos
tetter's Celebrated Stomach Bitters a trial.
CADTION.-- - We.caution the public against
wring any of the many imitations or counter•
felts, but ask for Holirwrisa's OLLISSATED
SrOsumi Brrraus, and see.that each bottle has
the words "Dr..T. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters"
blown on the side of the bottle, and stamped
on the metallic cap covering the cork, and
