-Old Captain W. of New York, owned a
fast mare, and was possessed of en equally
fast boy. One day fast boy stole fast ware
out the; pasture, and put out, in pretty fast
style to a horse race SOON miles di4tant.
While at the race, he won a cool V by put

than his compistitors. Fast boy returned to
the parental roof with fart horse about 4
e'clockin the afternoon, and feeling rather
sheepish, took it into his head that he would
appease the old man's wrath, by piling -Up
some wood that•lay around loose in the wood
shed. Now it came to pass that the old cap
tain'hail been at the same kind of work, and
had made one rine as high as be could. reach,
so that be could not see anybody on the oth
er side,,where fa=t boy was at Work. The
old gent had a very peculiar way of talking
to himself whtle at work, and feeling rather
indignant at fast boy, communed wish bim
self iu this wise :
"The're's that boy of mine, he's an awful
boy f rye 'done everything for him that he
could ask and now the scamp has stole—ye*,
stole the brown mare, and gkne off to a hove

curing the 'Gang rogue, and I'm inclined to
think it was the poorest investment I, ever

Young W. turned over a new, leaf after
this experience of paternal cogitation on his
life and custorns. -

But now I turns red every time I dinks of it."

heaven:if GOA will let'him. Let a man start
from the right place, let him go right, keep
