vagance has bon one of the chief characteristics
(if Mr. Buchanan's administration, and have

will ext.eed a hundred millions of dollars. Sena
tor Crittenden particularly has made himself
conspicuous in attempting to cheat the pnblic•in
this belief. lfe;as ono of those rho had to pass
upon the appropriations of the last scasion,ought
to have known that such a-statenient was a grokev
exaggeration. It he did not possess that know
ledge before, an official st2temerit prepared in
the otlice of Clerli of the IlOuse of Repro
sentatives,'and of ceurse reliable in every parti
cular, will inform hlm of the exact amount of
the aggregate appropriations made by Congress
at its late session.
By this it appars that the aggregate amount,ef
definite appropriations made for the current lie
cal yea': WAS $14,617, fill 88 ; while the indefur
ito appropriations made in tlit shape of private
bills, d , are estimated at over three - mill:ens to
be paid out of the treasury-making the gross
amount of sixty-eight milliens or dollars." That,
of course, is exclusive of the revenues of the
Post Office Department, which now enter into
the account of expenditures. ft is:its° exclu
sive of the unexpended balance of sixteen mil
lions remaining over in the - treasury from the
appropriations of the previous fiscal year, but as
such,unexpeadeil balances usually remain over
at the end of the year. and as that remaining at
the ehd of the year may not materially differ
from that ainount,it would be evidently improper
to include it.
From the'sixty-eiglit millions, hewever, so tip
propriated,must be deducted the following sums,

the administration have set it down. No one
who has witnessed or attentively watched the
proceedings of last session can deny that it 'was
the constant effort, on the part of the Exeeutive
nor the Democratic party, to ant down the ex
penditures to the lowest possible figure, and
equally constant effort on the part of the oppOsi
lion to load down the propriation bills as heavily
as possible. With this undeniable fact 'before
the people, and with the exhibit - of fifty-eight
millions as the total amount applicable to the
expenditures of the current fiseal year, is it not
the height of impudence and folly to be charging
the administration-with extravagance.' It only
shows to. what base and desperate means un
