Tut Kottsw.-4he Koran was ivritten.abOut

professors of Idolatry and the SeWs - endVh:is-
Lanvin the worship of oue God`,-whose unity
was the chief.point inculcated—under - Pertain
laws and ceremonies, exacting obedience to
M thomet, as he prophet. It was ceilainly
written in the -Koreish Arabic, and the lan.
whiCh certainly possessed every fine
qa.dity, was said to he that of Paradise. Ma
hornet asserted that the Koran was revealed
to him during the period of years,_by the
Angel Gubrieh The style of the volume is
beautiful, iluett and concih ; and whew the
majesty an d attriblites of God are described,
it is sublime and magnificent. Mahomet ad
mitted the divine mission both of Sickles and
of Jesus Cisrist. According to Gibbon, the
leading 'article of faith which Mahomet
preached is compounded of an eternal. truth
and a necessary . fiction, namely ; that there is

VIRTUE VINDICATED.-It Will be remem•
bereci.tbat about four miutbs ago, an account
was published in the papers, to the end 'tha
one Mrs. Wood, of Port Jervis, had shot a
man named- Eldridge, of the-same place, and
• that his life was devai red of fora. time. The
causeof the act, on the part of Mrs. Wood,
- was ',announcedata be, because Eldridge had
charged her with a.want of chasity, nay, had
boasted that she was his paramour. The lady'
could not brook . the insult, and, ventured,
•though sire had a husband, to.take Eldridge
in hand herself, so she deliberately shot him
in the face, the bullet knocking out several
. teeth, and nearly carrying, :away brains as
well. The sequel of the affair is already pub
lished. Mrs. Wood -has had her trial, and
the jury, after being , out an. hour, "Came' in
. with a verdict of an/Initial, which -means
served him right." We cannot but think
, that Eidridge met with a justspunishment, at
the handS of an outraged wife and mother ; or
rather, we are disposed to'believe there were
very decidedly palliating circumstances Con
_meted with her attempt to rid the-world of a
cosoirdly.slanderer.'

but without doing them any injury. The

difficulty that. he 7 a-,as -tied, thrown into a
. wagon, and conveyed to jail. When he ar
rived there, he managedto get a bar of iron,
with which lie assaulted one .of the keepers,
injuring birri somewhat. When in the cell
he tore off the spigot of the hydrant; which
he thl.w with lunch force itt' those outside,
vat° . narrowly escaped feeling its weight. He
then' broke up some of the woodwork inside,
with Which be made a club, and swore he
would knock oul the brains of any person
who should enter his cell. His conduct was
such that the sheriff ordered him to fie shot,
and two balls were fired at him, One of which
grazed one leg, and the other ball took effect
in the other leg. He then submitted—the
ball was. 4tracled, when be asked to see it,
and swallowed. it immediately. , • •

Tne Magnetic Belt.
TILE undersigned, after many years of careful
research and experiment, have discovered
and perfected a Safe, convenient and uneorception
able means of completely controling thq maternal
function, without employing any of the unnatural
and deleterious expedients so, often resorted to
for that purpose. Apart from its sj)ecifi use of
pre‘'enting conception, it lean infalible means of
restoring to-health and vigor the nbused, deranged
and enfeebled pracreatiVe functions of females,
and of reinvigorating and restoring the general
health to its wonted constitutional integrity. It
consists'of a Magnetic Belt; which encircles the
body directly over the os ilium, by the magnetic
action of which the fecundating power is inter
cepted and held in abeyance, nud the vital neuro.
magnetic currents, otherwlso drained off by sex
ual excesses, are turned back thro' the system;
stimulating all the viscera to a healthy normal
tone. In a true moral aspect, no valid Objection
can be urged against its lawful use, as it is de
signed to subserve a great humanitary purpose in.
the - reproductive economy. It is impossible in
a brief card to give the reader an adequate con
ception of the virtues of the discovery and the
modes of its action. 'Accordingly, the proprietors
have prepared a pamphlet, fully embodying the
phiLsophy ofits influence upon the genitive func
tion, its uses, tests and results, which they will
forward upon the receipt of six cents in postage
stamps, to any address. The price of the Belt
is $5, sent by mail free.
