Accident on the Rome' and Wa!
teitown
A letter from the office of the Northern :four,
Ad, at Watertown gives the following...partie.
Dios of the shocking railroad accident that oc
„aped
at Pie:repent Manor on the, evening of
6th test
it s pears that a company of nine persona
two married men with -their wives, and five ,
w og ladies—thought to amuse. themaglies
'lle as evening's ride from the Manor to Sandy
c ree k, on a liand.car; -- after ' they supposed,.
the lastregular train fur the day bad passed.
After tanning abed half a mile, and- as they
`sere tunings curve in the road,
.they were
:met by a locomotive and tender which.. was
L ar king up trout the creek to the Manor.: ,
The unfortuate occupants of the hand-car
had buts moments warning and that moment
served only to paralyze the ladies with fear.
One of the men seized his wife, and the other
coo his wire and one of the young ladies; and
sprang from the car. The other four were on
the car when the collision took place ; three Of
them were thrown under the locomodie: and
crushed to death, and the other was found
m ortally wounded by a blow which she recd.
red in the forehead. The awful mangled, re
' mains of the bodies were picked up brodght”
back to the manor, to those friends who had
joyously parted with them but a few moments
before; but the Avail of woe Went up where the
sounds of joy had been.
As rear as we can usertailahem this morn
ing, the names of the young.: ladies killed
were:—Miss Wright, of Oswego ' and Miss
Williamson, Miss Allen, and Miss Andrus,_ of
Pierrepont Manor. -
We cannot say thatany particular blame can
be attached to the engineer, Mr. D. Smith,
although he regrets not having raised a light
sooner, as he e:iould hare done; but as they.,
wire coming on - the Watertown, he . deferred
.patting up.a light until they should reach the
;minor ,
The pirty were warned agiinst piing upon,
the track by the station mast , r, as some spec
ial train or locomotive might be upon the road
which most unfortunately and .unexpectedly
proved to be the case.
Fire in Now York.,.
Destruction of Swift's Sugar Refinery—Near
ly half a million of properly destroyed.
About half past 12 o'clock on Monday morn
ing, afire broke out in Swift's sugar refinery,
earner of (Vest and Laight streets,, which re
sulted in one of the most extensive conflagra
tions that has occurred in this city, for a long
time. The building was one of the largest,
establishments of the kind in New York, being
ten stories high, occupying a whole block on
Washington, West, and Laight, streets, and
enclosing a court yard in the centre.• The
alarm of fire was rung for the eighth district
ihnt one o'clock, when the firemen, a carnal&
arable portion of whom were engaged at the
time at a fire in Pearl street, arrived in great
force from all quarters. In consequence of
the great cvant of the building they could not
act with much effect, and the:tire, which had]
tinily ban razing for nearly half au hour,
wn spreading nith fearful rapidity, and in a
_den time the Is hole large establishment was 111
enveloped in one vast sheet of flame. The
immense, number of hogsheads and - barrels of
sugar stored up in the building, only added so
much more fuel to the devouring clement.--
The lames soon burst forth from every win
dow. and shooting through _the 'roof rose in
awful grandeur to the sky. Such was the im
posing, extent of the blaze, that the whole city
taxame perfectly illuminated, while burning
embers were dancing, in the air in all direct I
thins. Ail the efforts of the firemen •th check
the raging fire in its destructive course, were
now utterly abortive. The heat at this time
was so intense that the firemen were eontpell
edto quit their posts while the row• of build
ings in lasight street, fronting, the burning ed-1 were every moment in clanger of taking
fire. In fact, some of them were pretty much
scorehed, but by the exertions of the gallant
firemen, isho kept several streams, constantly
playing upon this building, all further damage
was prevented. The fire continued to blaze
furth with terrific fury until about four o'clock I
when the walls carne down with a tremendous I
crash, converting the whole building into one
homing mass of ruins. The falling of the
- walls smothered the flames to a considerable
extent, and the firemen could now act with
some effect. The whole building is 'razed to
the ground, while the large stock of sugar I
=fined in the same is completely destroyed,
,ex,eepting a few hogsheads and barrels, togeth
er with the office fixtures, books, &q., which
were saved. The whole lossOf Messrs. Swift
is estmated at nearly half a million dollars, I
which is only partially covered by the inset- , r
ranee. We understand that they are insured I
to the amount of 8250.000, in the various city t
insurance companies. The buildings are esti
mated to have been worth 8200,000 and the
property nearly 8300,000. Thefo.oras a strong
police force present from the beginning of
the fire, and rendered efficient service inmain
trilling order and preserving a large amount of
property. Considerable alarm and confusion
railed among' the inmates of the opposite
buildings, who were running about in a frantic
Cate, some only half dressed, and some carry
ingfurniture, in all direction3.-2V. y. Herald
