inthlidnal and State enterprise more strongly
t a r ki„i, than as seen in the enterprise of I
those
gentlemen, movement and the slow oventept .of ~th4l
state, in building the North Branch_ Canale:--
Ei g iieen months only have elapsed since the
:first blow was struck on the Lnekawannn and
w es tra Railroad. In less than fifteen months
'sfterthe commencement of the work on that
mi t if t eas finished, and the cars were run
sag over a road nearly fifty miles in length.
Seventeen years ago the , first work was dune
on the North Branch Canal. It is not finished I
jet, nor can a single cargo of Coal be taken I
from our' valley through this Canal, to the
Canal waters of the State of New York, in fif- l
teenmonths from this time, provided an appro.
priatic;n be made immediately, of money,
enough to complete it. Thus the State .IMs
been engaged more years in building a canal
only twice the length of the Lackawanna and
Western Railroad. The money invested, by
the stock.holders of the Railroad, is already j
paying the interest on the amount invested by
its men earnings while

been an annual tax upon the pockets of the
people to pay itlinterest. if a man supports
himself by his own industry and wise calcula
tions, we applaud Lim. Bat if he compels his
friends to give him that support, mien he cart
and ought to do it himself; we ought to curse
bin Had a judicious policy been adopted by
the State in regard to our canal,- it would have
been finished years ago, arid its - own earnings
would now hart been paying the - interest on
the money which it cost, and it tvould now be
supporting itself. A different policy has been
pruned, and it compels the people to support
it. The policy then which compels the people
to do - this. ought to be cursed.

Those who own coal and depend tipon'thia
anal fora cemmunieation through which to
send to market, are compelled to stand idle
with their arms folded, while their neig, libocs'
are whirling the valuable mineral product td
thrust every extreme point with profit. This
is the difference between the enterprise of a
few:dive gentlemen, and the snail-like plod
ding of the great State of Pennsyliania.—

Silver Muting California.
Nearly four Mouths ago the discovery of

miles. But little attention was paid to the
matter until within ashort time, ithen a

The system adopted at present is similar 1
to that employedlat Gold Hill and otherr

five to seven dollars per day. But: few
men are yet emyloyed in the mine: and
they are confined to the residents of the
