DESTRECTITE FIRE IN NEIV HAVEN.-
Yesterday afternoon about half-past four
e'clock, while a severe storm of rain and
sleet, ace. mpaided by a high north-east
trial w as raciivr c , a fire was discovered in
the academ.. building of Mr. Wm. H. Rus- \
sell on Wooster Square, which, with one or
two buildings attached, was .entirely des
troyed, with most of the contents.
lessell -was in the upper , school
room, with aboht 25 boys, whom it was
bond impossible to pass out of the door,
en account of the dense smoke, and Mr.
Russell was obliged to lower the boys out
of the second story windows, through one
of which be also escaped.
The academy contained two libraries of
valuable books, which were nil lost, as were
also abut thirty carbines need by the
scholars, and many other articles of much
value. Had it not been that the roufs of
the adjacent buildings were - covered with I
snow, a terrible confligratim, must have
resulted.
A young man named George P. Sanford;
chile attempting to rescue some articles
ci badly barnt. but his injuries are not
to prove fatal.
The buildings • (which were owned by
Kesnrs S. arid T. French, ) as well as the
article; which they contained, were insured,
tblagh we do not learn to what extent.—
