change is made in the tariff it must be done
by Conaress, and that the Democrats have,
and will have for many years, a majority in
that body, so that if they expect or desire
any alteration, they must look to the Dem
ocratic party, and not to Gov. Johnston.

ernor Johnston, when in the Legislature,
voted for an appropriation of $405,000 to
the Gettysbur g tapeworm.

One of the mo l st terrible calamities th at
we have ever, been called on. to Chronicle,
took place in the town Of Brighton (five
miles from this city, between 1,1 and 12 o'-
clock, on Tuesday night, August 19th. A
brief notice of the heart rending affairs ap
peared in: ye,steMay's paper. We, have
gathered up the following particulars ;
Mr. Onacker's!house was built_ of wood,
WO stories in_ height, and, as is frequently
the. case r the oven was , constructed °Oho

been baking during the early' part of the
evening, and; upo'n finishing, the work had
not removed the- Coals. - ' • -_.
About midnight, Mr. Onacker and his
wife were awakened from Sleep, by the most
dreadful shrieks.' -- They jumped - from lobe
bed ; the smoke was, pouring into thoir
room, half stifling them with' its thick hot
volume :.the most; horrible cries and groans
proceeded from the apartment occupied by
their five. sons. The awful truth flashed
at once upon the ininds of tbe poor parents.
They attempted to rush to, the rescue of
'their darlings. 'The flames choked their
Tway. In ten rni utes the house would be
smoulderinghe pof ruins. Noir was the
Inip time , to escape, and the miserable fa
,her and mother, almost crazed with a sense
f the disaster, snatched up their sixth and
ast child •a mere, infant, -wko fortunately
lept with them, and rushed into the open

The first . neighbor that came upon the

struted in such a way as to prevent voters from
approaching the same;'and it shall be the duty of

Also that in the 4th section of the Act, Of As
sembly, entitled "An Act relating to executions
and for other. purposes" approved April Ifith, 1840,
it is enacted that the aforesaid 13th section, "shall
not be construed as to prevent ady militia Officer or
borough officer fromserving es Judge, Inspector
or Clerk ut any general or special Election in this
Commonwealth." .I • •
Pursuant to the prdvielons contained in the 76111
section of the act aforesaid, the Judges of the
aforesaid district shall, repectively take charge of
the certificate or return of the election of their
respective districts, and produce them at a meeting
of one Judge from each dittrictat the Court House
I in the Borough of Montrose, on the third day after
`the day of election, being the present year 'on
Friday the 17th day of October nes4 then and
