Nit. Richard Burr, late . of_ the Brig
1 3 sg, Island, stated the following"partiou
!ars to ono or more of the Marine 'Survey
0, o f ihi) port, on his last- arrival, which,
b oo rir, lvas some time since. Ho is no w
absent oa a trip to the eastward. When
he returns, we are. promised an interview
v i t h him, and.an extract from his logbook.
Capt. Barr states that when in latitude
S deg. North, and long. - 21 or 22'Wnst, on
his passage from the Isle Of Sal, Cape de
Voids, to Rio Grande, there being a dead
calm, a shoal of singular looking fish ap...
preached his vessel. A very largo one,
hich he tool: to be the mother of the small
,nes, appeared to be about 120 feet long;
nil its body as large as'tho lower mast of
a ship of 500 tuns. Moving towards the
brig, she came at one time within about 20
feet. She would raise her head 10 or, 12 ;
feet oat of the water, look around on the
objects presented, then settled
,ber bead
and body under the water, and reeve on.—
Of the small ones there were 120 to 150.
They we're abitt the brig and in sight 20
minutes or more. They were steering •to
the Eastward. Some of the small ones
MOO quite along the side of the brig, Capt. i
Burr havidg a . pair of five prong granes on
board, seized it, and struck it into the neck
of one of the smallest. But in attempting
to haul the prize on board, the body parted
from the head (the graces having cut the
back bone off,) and fell overboard. The
head was saved, and put in salt for preset-
Tanen. It is now in the possession of the
Marine surveyors; and a queer concern it I
is. The head proper, back to the gills, isi
13 inches long. The mouth or muzzle is a
compromise between that of a sucker and
common snake. It has no teeth, and if it
o'er had a tongue, the unruly member is_
now missing. Itszill's are very large and
powertn!, and its mode of securing its prey
was evidently, suction. The eyes are large,,
one on each side, and 10 inches back froth
the muzzle back to within an inch or two
of the eyes, the size of the proboscis,
•
hatever it may be called, i:s nearly -mil
era, say an inch and a quarter in diameter,
a its present dinduished condition; but
.• here the eyes are inserted, the diameter
• abut two inches, and increases 'back to
he extremity of the gilli. Just behind
he gills are two fins, oue on each side, and
.t that point commences what may be call
d the body. Of this only about four inch
are preserved, enlarging to the point
here the graces broke- it asunder. The
mire length of the bead, including this
.mall section of the body, is - 17 inches.--.
'apt. Dirr, thinks the portion of the bo y
• hieh fell off, was 15 or 16 feet long, at
cast; and its largest diameter 5 or 6inch,
There %vas co back fin_ The tail was
et seen. Theca/re casing of this strange
, sh'or strpent, as the case may be, is much
order than the common bone; and we'can
immagine that in a full grown sub
ect, it would be ballet proof. It is how
rer, much harder at top and on the sides
ban beneath. The capacity of the gullet,
; well as the abseiTee of teeth, showS that
his animal, like the land snake, is in the
,abit of swallowing its food on the -gross,
ithunt mastiention.
Of the mother snake, tioout 40 feet was
en above the water at once.
These, gentle reader, are the facts ni
hey are given to us. Mr. Burr is said to
~ e a man of excellent character. 111teth
•r what he saw, was a family of the sea ser
.ents, or not, the reader can judge is well
• s we. The part above described, is be
ore our eyes, and can be seen by any one
hoideasei, at the office of the Marine sur
eyors. _lf it is not a part of a young sea
.arpen t, what is it?? Will the naturalists
ea us ? evidently a water animal ;or
c what is the use of gills and fins ?• We
.ave neveriseen the like of it, before ; and
e understand the old salts are equally at
tilt in re&rd to it. About the eyes, we
:re told, it resembles a 'certain species -of
.'igator. But the mouth is entirely unlike
hat of the aligator ; the long proboscis or
.nout does not belong to the alligator; and
m the whole, it clearly belongs to a ilitTer
fatnily.--Jour. of Cone.
