Arrest of another Fugitive Slave.
Riot and Rcecuelf the Fugitire.
liosToig, Feb. 15,1 851
Deputy Marshal Bailey. and • assistants,
ar
tested at:Corn Hill Coffee House, to-414y, one
Frederick Wilkins, a negro waiter, on a war
-Irant issued by the U: S. Commissioner, G. T.
Curtis, on a complaint that said Wilkins is a
slave. He was taken with no oppo
sition, And carried immediately to the U. S.
Court room.
From the documents offered by the claim
ant, it appears that the accused was the prop
erty of John Debree, Purser in the U. S. Na,
vy, of Virginia, and that he escaped in May,
11850. The deposition was to the effect that
the claimant had seen the prisoner in B oston
and conversed with him, when the prisoner ac
knowledged that he had escaped from Norfolk.
The counsel for the defence asked for a post?
!porrement in order to prepare testimony.—
This was granted, and Tuesday next, 'at 10 A.
1 31., was assigned fur the examination.
The Deputy 31arshal then ordered the room
to be cleared of spectators. which was gradual
ly done. The prisoner remlned in the custo r
dy of a dozedmen, as, by a law of the '..State,
the jail cannot be used So imprison fugitive
slaves.
His counsel' wishing to consult with him,
they were - readily admitted to the room to the
number of half a dozen. They remained about ;
half an hour, and in the meantime a large
crowd of negroes gathered upon the Outside, •
blocking up the antr.ince to the court.ioom;
and as the door Was !opened to let the last
lawyer leave the Miami, the mob from without
suddenly rushed in, seized, and knocked!down
the officers in keeping, and filled the Court- I
room. The prisoner himself was frightened'
at their demoniac appearance, and flee!, With a
cry of murder to the farther end of the room.
the was, however, secured by the mob, who
had speedily silenced the opposition of the
few officers in the room, and taker in triumph
down the stairs, and into the' street The ufft
leers did not attempt to fellow, and with shouts
of triumph the mob hurried off with the I fugi
tive, and were last seen -in the vicinity of Bel
knap street, where negroes chiefly congregz.t..f.,
It is thought impoi.sible to re-arrest the fu
*ire, as his friefids have no -doubt hurried
him off ere this, to the Canadian frontier. 15.
