tention of the people generally, but mere

are to be promoted by the acts of that
body.
The gnestion of the election of TT. S.
Settatar, in place of J.C. Fremont, mill be a
subject of little interest and excitement.
Already a large number of candidates are
in. the &hi and anCertainty regarding the
pnii , ical complexion of the Legislature,givos
additional interest to the contest.
The people are looting with much lac

Congress, in the hope that such acts will
meet with prompt 'disposal as shall relieve
the State from embarrassment, and put her
in the road to prosperity.
The weather for the past two or three
weeks has been lovely in the extreme.

entire period, and it's rays have poured
down warm and cheering. What portion
of the old States can boast of such weather
as we are now enjoying in mid-winter.
_ The health of the'city and of California
generally, is good. The cholera has en
tirely disappeared.
Business shows no great activity ; in
fart, is rather dull, and prices are not very
eneneraging to shippers. -
The most important news that Nre see in
the papers, is the report of serious disturb=
annes with the Indians.
Several bliirmishes have taken place in
the vicinity of Trinity;and the' Kalmath,
and-the whites in sparse settlements are in
constant dread of the hands.
The Indians in the Northern mines hare
alsri enmmirted snme depredations, and at
tacked trading and mining settlements.
