plank in the lonely waters of the wide ocean,
the thought of the still homestead shall come
across the desolation, bringing always light,
hope, and love.
Have no dungeon about your house—no room
. yon never open—no blinds that are alwaysshut.
Don't teach your daughters French before
they can weed a flower bed, or cling to a - side
saddle.
And &natters, do not be ashamed of the
pruning knife. Bring to your door the nearest
flowers from the woods; cultivate the friendship
of birds; scorn the scamp that levels his mur•
derous gun at the bluebird or robin. Study
botany, learn to love nature, and seek a higher

Kitchen Manures
One of the amusing inconsiatencies of agri
cultural existence is the fact that one—one !
why, hundreds and thousands indulge in the
practice—purchase a bag or barrel of some ad
vertised mercantile manure in town, at an ex
pense of from three to ten dn1iaria.5.....1 twolye
miles at a cost of See dollars, and while they
are doing this actually throw away home fer
tilizers of double the value, that might be saved
and wssnared for *nen...ion at a cost of seven
ty-eve cents.
For all manurial purposes, where any of the
ordinary garden vegetables, melon-, grape-vines,
and fruit-trees are sought to be beneSttpd, a bar
rel of mingled soap slide, greasy dab water,
kitchen-scrapings, and chamber-slops is .f more
worth than a hag of the best Pacific guano ever
brought around Cape Horn.
There are always eunuch old barrels and tubs
knockinc about, often needlessly knocked to
pieces at every farm bonne, to save all such ma
terial In. if not it were better economy to ex
pend five dollars for a fe— second-hand barrels
to store such kitchen offal in, than to let it co
latterly to waste, and spend fifteen dollars for
some mercantile adulterations of not a quarter
of the value.
A Farmer's Advice to Farmers.
Mr. Jacob Strawn, the great Western farmer,
communicates the following advice to f a rmers
When you wake up, do not roll over, roll out
It will give you time to ditch all your slonghs,
break them, harrow them, and sow them up
wit timothy and red clover. One bushel .of
clover seed to ten bushels of timothy is sufficient.
Make your fences high, tight, and strong, so
that you will keep cattle and pigs out
Re sire and get your hands to .bed by eight
o'clock. They will rise by force of circnmstances.
Pay a hand—if he is a poor hand—all you
promise him. If be is a good hand, pay him a
little more; it will encourage him to do still bet
ter.
Always feed your help as well as you do your
self; tor the laboring men are the bone and sin
ew of the world, and oneht to be well treated
I am satisfied that getting op early, ictinntry
and 'regular habits, are the very best medicine
ever prescribed for the health.
To Insure Eggs for Winter.
If an old hen has Peen laying well all sum
mer, and is late in moulting, she requires rest
and time to recover from the moult; and if cold
weather comes on her when hut partially moult
ed, she will, perhaps, be a long time recovering
the condition proper for laying. If, however,
she is allowed to sit late in summer, so as to rest
her from egglaying, and during the time she is
tending her brood she is eneouragetrto moult,
by warmth and generous feeding, shewill, when
• her moult is completed, soon. get-into laying
condition, and, by good management,may often
be kept laying all the winter, and lay better and
larger eggs than pullets. I give a little barley
and oats mixed each day, and have the run of a
small field. To prevent their wanting to sit, I reg
ularly took up all the ergs so laid, and never
