A dog that knows enough to kill sheep knows
enough to be sly and still about it The great noise
caused by a number of bells makes him fear for his
safety, and he leaves without doing damage.

a Grail/Wag appointment. —We notice with
much pleasure that Lutberll. Tucker, esq., one of
the editors of tho °wary Gm:lnnen, has been cho
sen Protessor of the Theory and Practice of Agricul
ture in the Anton% Scientific School, connected
with Rutgers College. We cannot see how a better
relation than this could have been made. In both
the theory and pnictice of agriculture, Mr. T. stands
:n the first rank.
With Lh. Wool on.—The following receipt is
then for tanning sheep skins with the wool on :
"Take one tablespoonful of alum and two of salt

'i.prinkle this powder on the flesh side of the skin
togetherfwith the wool out; hang up In a
c ool place. In two or three days, as soon as dry,
nke down, scrape the flesh side with a blunt edged
knife till clean." This completes the pmeese.—
Sach skins make excellent saddle covere.
.Iv-lcultwra4—The crops of Pennsylvania, In
I‘os, are reported by the Agricultural Bureau, to
compare favorably with those of 1804. Supposing
10 to represent each crop of last year, the crops of
this Fesson would, from present appearances, be an
follow,: Winter wheat, 934; spring wheat, 9,4‘
rat, 10 4-9 ; barley, 103-6 ; oats, 1234 ; corn, 12 --
fo rgt,um, 10,li; potatoes, 11X; tobacco., 9; fli t ,
10X: b atter, 11 ; cheese, 10k; timothy hay, 13 3-5;
clover bay, 12%; wool, 11. This indicates an In
crease in all our agricultural products, except wbeat,
and tobacco, in which a slight decline has occurred.
It the western and northwestern States, there is an
..timated decline of nearly 24,000,000 bushels In the
wheat crop.
Disfrarschised.—Als the tall elections will soon
it coming on, it should he borne in mind that by
virtue of the proclamation of the President, of
Yuck 10th, issued in conformity to a law of Con

ed who departed from the Jurisdiction of the dis
triers in which they were enrolled, or went beyond
the limits of the United States to avoid the draft, or
deserted from the army or navy, are prohibited
from evercillne the elective franchise, It will be
the duty of the officers to enforce this penalty in all
cases at the coming electinn.
A complete fist for every township in the county
should be immediately made out. It is a work alike
Of political importance and sound justice. Let the
law be strictly enforced.
More to Compute the Income Tor.-4 4 iince the
poncation of the income tax list there has been
considerable discussion as to the rate of taxation
and the amount of the incomes of those whose
names appear in the list. dome persons who have
nut read the law, suppose that live per cent is the
rate `wessed upon all incomes, without regard to
the amount. This is not correct. The law requires
that all incomes over six hundred and not exceed
lor zive thousand dollars, shall be taxed at the rate
of iv per cent., and the excess over five thousand
at the rate of ten per cent It an individual's in
come be five thousand dollars per annum, the six
hundred dollars exempted by law is deducted, and
the remaining forty-four hundred assessed at the
rah• of five per cent If the income be ten thousand
dollar", the rate will be five per cent on forty-four
hundred, and ten per cent on the remaining live
thousand dollars.
MU' at Home.—A It:pular Monthly, devoted to
and useful Literature. Edited by
Ammo& August. Niu.- Fork: Charles Scribner
This periodical has entered upon its career with
(very prospect of Eruccess. Its title is an excellent
41.eription of Its contents. The tone of the maga
zine I. Christian, but the articles are not excitusively
upon religious subjects. One feature in all the num
bers which have yet appmred which we think pecu
liarly worthy of notice, la the stories of the suffer
ings and prosecutions of the early Scotch and Ger
man Protestants. The youth of our land cannot
ii.rn to respect too much those excellent people—
the Lollard's, the Hussite!, and the Waldenses—
"wandered in deserts and in mountains, in dens and
caves of the mrth," and suffered all afflictions with
wonderful heroism and with exalted faith.

arms the Sokfttra.—We have already mimed
to the Importance of the assessment. The end of
this month is the limit fixed for attending to this
duty. It Is well known that the influence of the
war has tended greatly to change population in ev
ery iocallty. Every community In the Common
welt, has felt its change more or leas,. On this
account It almost becomes to revise the
entre assessments of every election dlstrlet. In re
ference to the citizenship of soldiers, the assess
ments require particular revision. The right of the
soldier to vote in the field, rendered it unnecessary
to place his name on the assessor's duplicate last
rear. But the return of the soldier to civil life—
la resumption of residence In the respective elec
tion districts, now renders it an imperative legal
duty to be assessed in the district in which he at
present resides, or in that in which he intends to re.
sidr, ten days before the coming October election,
to insure him the right to vote. Every soldier
should at once see to this important matter. The
diffentat local committees throughout the Common
wealth should give the matter their particular atten
tion. The tames of the present political contest,
largely interest the heroes who have just rescued
the land from the bloody grasp of treason, and no
soldier should by negligence, lose his right to par
ticipate in the decision thereof.

Income--The following twalatnakations tomb
on a subJect deserriog attention:
September: 1865.
Mr. EDITOII :•••••I noticed in your last paper, the
te-
Wn of the income returns for this county. 'The
hat which is published gives, In the whole county,
but twenty-three names. Those who metro a eala,
rr from which the deduction Is previously made,
Would add, perhaps, two or three names.
Will you give ns In your next, in a parallel col
man, the population of Susquehanna County? Will
lOU rive, also, the form of the oath, by which the
return of income is attested? The deposition re
perm one to say that the statement which he has
given or all his income, ispal, particular, and orrrert.
These are strong words.
There has been some criticism of the work of col
lectors and officials. It has been said that they ale
la a hurry often, and do not care to take the time
which u cinee inquiry requires, or that. they me bin
(lvied from a full investigation by a common courte
sy, or that they assume that the person to whom
tiny apply la of such character, that they need not
question that his statement Is complete and accu
rate. It might be a dishonor to question such a
man as though there were any donht of his word, or
to examine him liken witness before a Police
Court, whose only object Is to conceal the truth In
regard to themselves. Bat the form of this oath
goef. far 10 acquit them of any neglect. It places
the whole responsibility of the return with the man
who stands under oath to 6sy that his ntnrn is furl,
poli , ederr, toed no-rot
And is there not something in nn old book which
.neestors used to read, mid which we someti mes hoarar bO4l/e passages from on Sunday, in -regard to
letsLimuily, oaths, truth-telling, etc.? That perhaps
you may also pu blish.
September Ist, ISM
MB. &mu :—I assume that you have some page
open to letters from the peOplo—the fair expression
of public opinion. Tho recent :Ist of Incomes in
your journal, or letimr, th e tames which would
form a list which le not pribliabed or written, have
called out general mibc=.' There Can no longer
be any dolt of the value of the publication of
these annual returns. It b wholesome. if It Do bit
ter. ;
Butt protest against the form which the criticism
is raking. It is said that the return is a mere farce.
But it is not a faree,lt Ls a trend. It hi add that the
returns do tot represent the real incom b re actual
anneal proceeds from butinese or card of persons
the community. But, If they do n ot, they only
represent so many falselloods. It is said thstlhere
aro dec ep ti v e hich the intent of the law is evaded,
andreturns are given. But this Is not
shrewdness or cleverness. .It is dishonest practice
and criminally. ;The common talk shows that we
are In eisnmw. of a loss of all' moral sense, It indi
cates a tendency which will only cease with the
overthrow of all personal morality, , Themean cheat,
the low cunning, the evaAhro; return is followed by a
more dangerous public sentiment in which the re
ality of crime is gone.
There la another form of public criticism, which,
however unjust It often maybe, la yet here inevit
able. When ono looks tit the way in which people
live, and compares it with the return Income, which
is published, the conclusion Is before the whole com
munity. It Is this. Men are living so far beyond
their income that they are oil the eve of inevitable
failure and bankruptcy, for their returns of Income
are false. We tan take the alternative.

Praf.TilloteonV [Ono .—The concert on Tues
day evening last came fully up to the standard of ex
cellence we had predicted tor it. The audience was
large, the singers sang the difficult music assigned
to them superbly, and the plantste and hand played
finely. The only complaint we have heard made
came from persons Who lamentably lack the capacity
to appreciate the music of such composers as Rossi
ni, Schubert, and Mendlesaohn. It is a pity we =-
not oftener have entertainments as elevating and
refining.
A Atu , llaf Ntedcd—That the court room of
the new Cnnrt House is a miserably constructed one
for sound was never more forcibly exemplified than
at the concert on Tuesday evening. With the ut
most care In enunciation on the part of the singers
(especially of the quartettes) mnre than half their
words could not be understood by the audience. We
need a better room for concerts and lectures than
that or the Academy Hall. Have we not enterprise
and capital enough in Montrose to build one?

Mr. Gottschalk—the dlitinguishedpianist, pre
dicts that the Meson at Hamlin Cabinet Organs will
becoming as fast/iambic as the pianoforte has been,
and will indeed be "sure to find Its way Into every
household of taste and refinement which can possi
bly afford its moderate expense." He !pronounces
the Mason & Hamlin instruments far importer to all
others of their class.
Something New.-We call attention to the ad
vertisement of the Duplex Elliptic or doable Spring
Skirt. Though a recent invention, it has become
very popular, and is rapidly obtaining the preference
over other kinds in use. The rods in it are com
posed each of two delicate and well-tempered steel
springs, which are ingeniously braided together
edge to edge, the lower rods heavier, and having a
double covering. This peculiarity of construction
makes this skirt very strong and durable, and also
to exceedingly flexible that It readily adapts itself
to the form of the wearer, and allows of any amount
of doubling and crushing without injury to its shape.
There skirts are unquestionably the lightest, most
desirable comfortable, and economical ever made.
These are advantages which ladies, who have exper
ienced the discomfort and inconvenience of single
springs, will duly appreciate.
