Science as an Allerrinton—Sclenee cannot re
move all "the ills that flesh is heir to," hut properly
understood and skilfully applied can do much In that
direction.
Our readers will have noticed In our columns the
advertisement of Dr. Weeks, "Teeth extracted with
out Pain." Ho does this by producing upon the
patient a brief and pleasant sleep by means of
' nitrous oxide" or laughing cas. Tills agent for
producing momentary insensibility to pain is held to
entirely safe and agreeable. We see no reason
for doubting that it is so. We have witnessed a
case in which it was applied by Dr. Weeks. It was
in every respect entirely successful. It does seem
that science has accomplished another and complete
triumph, and "pulling teeth" need be no longer
dreaded.— Carbondate Advance.

CARD—In Philadelphia, June TAth, James C.
Card, EL 11, In the twenty-ninth year of his age.
Dr. Card graduated at the Eclectic Medical Col
lege, Philadelphia, in 1861. He immediately com
menced the practice of medicine and continued the
same with good success till last March, when hn was
appointed by Gov Curtis., Assistant Surgeon of the
100th Reg't, Pa Vois. Whilst faithfully discharging
the duties of his office in the army some four weeks
ago, be had a severe attack of congestion In his
stomach and bowels. This nearly prostrated him.
Having obtained a discharge, he at once made the
attempt to repair to his home In Gibson, but he
could only reach Philadelphia, where In six days he
expired. We all mourn and regret much our loss;
but to his bereaved companion, and other near rela
tives, the stroke is nearly overwhelming. Let them
lean upon the only arm that can sustain, In the hour
of trial. Muth might be said in commendation of
this amiable young man and Physician. His intel
lect was strong and clear, his morals pure, and his
fidelity In every relation each as to secure the re
spect of all who knew him, and to give presage of
a long, metal, and happy career. Surely, life and its
glory are but momentary, and soon fade like the
dower of the field. [R. I.
