M ff: gvericatturat. To Farmers. ' The eincinneti Gazette sounds the trumpet to farmexa es fiallovta ' "The time for 'the breaking of winter is proachin,g. Seen will beam the light and w np atMth of Pal g. Soon all the activities of na ture will awake, and the mind of man in sympa thetic' teapots° will arouse to he the labors of an other year. As the caroling of t first birds is heard; the industrious will think it is high time to be up with the dawn, and out to prepare for the business of the year. "Bills Bathe snow is gone there is plenty to do. It will be , a good time to sow clover and grass seed upon the wheat, rye, and barley fields, in order to'lneure an early and an effectual germin ation. ' We cannot too forcibly urge the farm to scatter clover seed wherever it can be al loWed to grow, chiefly for the sake of enriching the land, If the soil is fertile, a growth of elo- Yet' plowed under will keep it so, and a cost of $5 in forty' years will save an average of twenty bushels of corn per acre for the whole time, be sides paying for itself ten times over in render ing. the ground more easy for cultivation. If your land ia,.niready run down for lack of at tention tri :tinder, a Clover crop plowed tin der :: .t'ellen pile year, "as it may be, and a crop aced besides, will graduallY restore its Niger and Make you laugh in the ample reward ofpur toil. There are many things that can be done pre. views to. the time tow hich to commence plow ing. The fences can be pat in good repair. The barn-yard can be cleaned up, and its contents, with the products of the stable and the other out is nos, can be got out upon the fields. There is no economy in letting manure lle du ring the summer to waste away under the rains and the - heat of the July sun. It can be scatter ed upon the soil, plowed under, and the ele ments that would waste during the summer will go in to the crops of the season. In the mean time, it can rot under ground more thoroughly, and at the same time assimilate Itself with the soil, end be as good or better for next year's growth than If ti were to lie in the yard until it rotted. It will be necessary now to keep a close watch of the stock to see that some animals are not becoming too feeble from the short feeding of the winter. Where many are herded togeth er, some will have been compelled to go half fed on account of the superiority of stronger ani mals, and they may need some extra attention just now. The, sheep will need looking after, especially the ewes from which an increase of the flock is expected. Wool is valuable now, and every lamb loatNis $5 wasted. It would require but little attention to save $lOO in a moderate flock of sheep. The cows will be "corning in," and if they should receive extra feed, especially of slopping, it will tell largely on the health of the cow in her critical time, and pay largely in the milk bucket. In short get thoroughly ready for the business when the times comes. Let nothing remain to hinder you then. A. moment lost is an opportu nity for misfortunes, said the great Napoleon. The early bird catches the worm, is a well ap proved proverb. "A stitch in time saves nine," is still understood by the thrifty housekeeper. The coming summer will afford plenty to do. Labor will be high as it ought to be,wlien pork is treble its old price, coffee also treble, and cot ton seven-fold what it has been when labor was fifteen dollars per month. So let there be no growling about high wages. You get it hack in the price of your productions. It is, however, your ptivelegre to get good ready, and he able to do an your 'own'work. To this end, give atten tion to theforegoing suggestions. If any of you still owe a payment on your farms, make haste to " square it off ;" and be prepared for "breakers ahead." Now is the time to conquer permanent security against ex ecutions and foreclosures, and insure that peace of mind without which this life affords but small enjoyment. Side 11111, or horizontal Wells. The title is strange, rind the idea doubtless a novel one to most of the readers of the Aar,- euUurist, It is well worthy their consideration- Mr. W. H. Gardener, of Muskegon, CO., Mich., thus writes: "One would thick from the inva riable rule of digging down for water, that it could be found in no other direction. In many localities it may as readily be found by digging up, as down, and the labor of drawing water e t•- er afterwards saved, as well as ranch of the la bor of digging the well. We have seen many wells in the States of New-York, Wisconsin, Wi etc , which could have been started horizontally chigan, into the hill-side, and reached water within but little greater distance horizontally, than was dug down into the earth perpendicul arity to dad it. A horizontal well has the follow ing advantages: It can be dug at any time or season; the earth can all be taken out in a bar rowthowevef farhorizontally the "level" is driv en ; a great saving of labor and time; by keep ing a gentle ascent from the opening, the water will draw itself; running out as from a natural spring ; they are more easily stoned, less dange rous, and can be deepened at any time. The question which first suggests itself' is: where can such a well be dug p --We answer: any where, at the foot of a hill of forty or more feet in bight, or on the side of a lint In sinking shaftp in mining, or digging railroad tunnels, water is very readily and almost uniformly found, digging horizontally, and often in great abundance the horizontal shaft cutting off more of the veins of water percolating through the earth, than a perpendicular one would." It is a matter of common experience where extensive draining operations are carried out, that living springs are cut so that water flows perpetually from the drain- When no such permanent sour ces of water are encountered, the flow from drains may be made to supply all the needs of a family and stock yard, except for a few months in the heat of summer.—American Agri cutturier. Preparing for Field Labors. Dining the month of- March, farmers should make all nrcPsvnry - preparations for performing the labor - lathe field, as soon as the soil has be come sufficiently dry to be plowed, and the sea son is right. Even on small farms, as well as on hsge ones there is much preparation to be made. Old'plows should be put in order, and new ones should be purchased; and it is important that a little effort be made to secure, as far as practica ble, those plows that arc best adapted to the kind of plowing to be done. Harrow teeth should be sharpened; rollers, cultivators, seed drilltt; spades; band-hoes, and all tools and im plements should be put in working order, before the time arrives for usingtheat Some, farmers are always behind-hand, not only during seed time„but with their haying and harvest; and one prominent reason for it is, their •tools and implements are not put in order in good time. Our own practice always was, to have every tool and farm implement in working order several weeks previous to the time when it was to be used.—Anieriezm Agrieulntnst.
