The Rotation of Crops.`
At thh late day It h not. worth my !while - to
enter into.a discussion .to prove that, !with our
prieent style of farming, a rotation of crops is a
necessity; for like a boy's arithmetical problem,
It provealteelf. • . • 1
herevernatUre Is left untrammelled' by the
farmer she • invariably produces a rotation of
crops. ' Our artificial grasses soon cease to strug- i .
glowith the natural ones; and even the latter
auneeed One anothefin almost regular- erder.—
In'trifr southern states, when the pine and other
soft , woods are cat off, the scrub oak and other
hard wood succeed them, to give place in their
time to softer ones. Nor need we go so far for
arrillustration of the Pact which I wish to illus
trate; All have noticed in oar own section of
the Union, that when a forest of oak, hickory or
other hard wood, is cleared oil; it is followed by
a growth of chestnut. It may he argued that
more or less of hickory will spring up among
the chestnut; such is the case, tint examination
Will show that such trees seldom attain much
size before they are "smothered nut" by those
which seem to be their legitimate successors.
All practical agriculturists will acknowledge
that; with our. present syitem, a rotation or
change of some kind or other, is the mainspring
of frucesstet' Then why this necessity? Our
practical farmer will no doubt say that the an
ewer to this question is simple, and is embodied
in the assertion that the soil becomes exhausted
of constituents needful for the particular crop or
crops under consideration. Is this answer satis
factory, and does it cover all the ground? Does
not analysis prove that the component parts of
corn and oats anseesentially the same, and that
they only differ in their proportions? Our rota
tion here (Chester c 0.,) consists of the four crops,
corn, oats, wheat, and grass in the order in which
I have placed them. The sod is turned under
and the corn is planted, and the next spring is
followed by the mit crop. Old farmers tell me
that it Is of no use to try to raise oats (fir the
grain) upon soit 7 -that it will " go down," be full
of weeds, &c, &e The truth of this assertion 1
have never verified by my own experience.—
Here the term "second crop corn; (corn after
corn) is synonymous with " halea crop," and
shows that corn cannot follow corn for many
crops. Now give the corn-field a.crop of pota
toes without any manure, (if the land is good )
and if you are fortunate to select a favorable sea
son, a good crop of anti-rot potatoes will be the
result. Next, give it a second cfiop of corn, and
if the season is as favorable :as that of the
first crop, as large, if not larger, yield will be the
result; yet we are told that potatoes are an ex
hausting crop.
• It has been proved by the experiments of John
ston and Da Sausure that all plants have two
powers, which may be termed the absorbent and
excretory powers; by the exercise of the first
they take into their circulation various cone
ponnds, and by a process not within the province
of my article to dismiss resolve them into their
chemical constituents, some of which they ap
propriate to thb reorganization of their structure,
and others, by means of their excretory power,
they discharge. To prove this, lea the leaves of
some plant of rapid growth be ImmerSed into
water, having in solution common salt, acetate
of lead, or other soluble substance whose pres
ence can readily be detected, and in course of
time the earth at or near the root of the plant
' will become impregrated with the matter in so
lution; this matter, it poisonous to the plant, will
soon collect in a sufficient amount to cause first
a diseised existence, and finally death. Can it
be that a crop of corn can in one season excrete
enough of any one deleteri?Jus,substence to In
terfere with the growth of it succeeding similar '
crop? And further, can it - be that this excreted
deleterious substance is favorable to the ,growth
of the potato or other root crop ? All have
old gardens know that even with the use of ma
nure
every year, they will in course of time fail
to give satisfaction as gardens. Let such a plot
be cropped with potatoes La' one or at mos t two
seasons, and note the result; nothing has been
added, and yet the garden will produce vegeta
bles as before.
Before I close allow me to stop up the hole
through which some of the readers may be el is
piked to enter a wedge with which to split my
argument.
the early part of my communication I have
stated that with our presr at system of forming a
rotation of crops is a necessity, &e. I tootle this
reservation, because under a system which I will
hereafter allude more fully to, it seems to be ve
ry free from necessity.
The Rev. Samuel Smith, of Lois Weedon,
Northamptonshire, England, has for eighteen
years past in succession raised crops of wheat
from the same plot, without the apd'i ion of
any manure whatever. N. - )w, says our critic,
where Is the excreting, theory? Smith's experi
ment, if examined into, neither proves nor dis
proves, for his practice is a strange combination
of approval and disapprobation. He marks
one his plot into strips of beds three feet wide,
every alternate one -of which he plants with
three rows of wheat one foot asunder, and
adopting Toll's theory of the atmosphere sup
plying all the needful, he thoroughly works and I
cultivates all the vacant spaces and by the 'time
the crop is harvested they are reedy to receitte
the nest one, and so on over the whole of his
experiment Such is the experiinent, and the
result is that from a crop of twenty-five bush
els per acre, of actual space, (only one-half
of which was planted) in Inter he increased
it to forty bushels in 1839, shire which time
I have seen no reliable account of his
proceedines, but would like to be furnished
with one which may chance to be in the posses
sion of any of thy many readers. It will be no
ticed
that Smith partially admits the benefits of
rotation by planting alternate spaces ; het by
raising successive crops furnishes a forcible
controversion of the theory that rotation is a
necessity.
lf, then, wheat excretes substances which are
poison when again taken into its circulation,
how does it happen that they arc nut in the way
of the third crop?
liT.ay not Smith's constant stirring and pulv,er
ixation of the soil bring these deleterious slit).
stances to the surface, w ‘ bere by contact with
the atmosphire their chemical composition. is
so altered that they are again fitted to become
food for the planet`
With the comparative profits and loss of
Smith's system I at present have nothing to do,
and hence do not wish to be understood to be
advocating the reduction of his experiment to
field practice.
In the Comatry Gentleman of the sth. L., of
Jennerville, states that he pref,r3 pliospbale
pomemade) pure bone dust, twat accouat of
its " more immediate action." Is not the ac
tion which wills produce eighty-six bushels of
oats in four months an-I one-half, immediate
enough, or can Phosphate produce more in lees
time? To keep the stimulating arid a xayi= the
