our object bat present to speak more palliest
tarty of Lamers' sons. While they should learn
to do all kinds of work, they should not be worn
down by It Tho development of the mind as
well as of the body, is worth more to them than
large and hard-earned estates. They should
not, on ordinary Occasions, have to labor so.
severely as to nnfii, them, during the season of
short days, for evening improvement. There is
no greater beneflOwhtch a parent can confer
upon his son, in order to fit him for success in
life, than to giveehliri -a taste for - Intellectual
cultivation. Every association should therefore
be thrown arotuklitas, and every attraction °t
iered to reduce- mental; culture and refinement.
The fartner, liherefure, who cannot, afford eepa-,
rate rein:nein his dwe lling
fora parlor ' to ' re
ceive compeer, and e.study ter library - for Ids
sons, should give;-tip the former for the sake of
the latter. A.goo' study-teem should at least be
secured, whatever: else may be required to , be
sacrificed; and thlithould be aietde attractive in
an intellectual, literary and scientific point of
viewoart..far -Vs treaty be practicable. Young
men and boys will then be leas disposed to stroll
about doting the ilcmg, evenings of winter, or
spend time in Idle talk, in bar-rooms, stores and
other places where the Idle and uncultivated as
semble, ti e d wh va l they often acquire the tine
lessons , drinking and gaming. t
Among the one occupations for evenings,
maybe mentioned the following: Drawing the
designs of bons* barns and other farm build
ings, and planning their internal arrangement;
sketching objectsin natural history, writing es
says on rural subj ects; consulting and corn
wring the views Oauthors; and especially im
portant,lhe piety:obi keeping a regular regis
ter of passing events. This register may be
kept in a eangle blank book, embracing obser
vations on the crop and the results of manage
ment, on the weather, Including notices of the
winds, clouds, storms, lbeteors, &-c., on tae' ap
pearances of birds; the advance of vegetation,
and on various occurrences, either of an immedi
ate personainatere, or from- more, widely ex-.
tended obsernition.. It Maybe deemed best to
plumbs different‘blank books toe different. de
partment., as, for trample, one on natural his
tory, another on.agrieulture, and a third on the
occurrence' of the day. Parents sh o uld encour
age their 'children to keep such records, as the
practice not only_ improves them in wilting,
thinking, acquiring Information and arranging
their thoughts, but such records may be referred
to in after years,:and will be found interesting
as wales valuable in many ways. In - order to
encourage young people in this practice as well
as to perform Kin a twat and finished manner,
handsome and Adtablelilank-books may be giv
en to them, as appropriate Christmas, hew-
Year's, or birth-day presents; or neat writing
desks, or portfolios, furnished in the same way.
The many excellent designs which we receive
for publication in this Journal, of various rural
contrivances and structures, possessing much '
merit in themselves, but drawn in an imperfect
and bungling manner, show the great and pre
vailing want of instruction in drawing, or en
couragement of its successful study. Every
facility should,j therefore, be afforded for im
provement in this art—pencils, and the beat in
struments:for drawing plans and designs should
not only be furnished, but the importance of
executing the work in the neatest and most
accurate manner - shown to the young artist.
We once knewpp boy who without any other in
steed= or guide, selected the most finished and
finest steel portrait in his teach , as a lesson to
cony—and determined to execute the work well.
He spent nearlian entire week on one eye arid
the nose with great success, for the closest scruti
ny could scarcely have discovered any inferiori
ty to the original. Although such extreme care
may net be adrisahle in ordinary cask yet it is
incompinistily better than the more frequent has
ty, careless, inaccurate; distorted and coarse pro
(factions so frequently seen.
An interesting.winter employment may b • af
forded to „void% farmers, by comparing and di.
getting the many items of interest comprised in
a farm diary kept during the preceding season.
The results of various practices may be observed
and iximpareg and valuable information thus
derived in relation to the most profitable points
of management A memorandum book may be
made from these examinations for the labors of
every week during the coming year, which may
include many ingestions for future observation
and experiment. All these will not only enable
she-young farmer to reach a degree of perfection
and profit which those who depend only on
their memory cannot attain, but the practice
will lead to order and system, and prevent the
omission of many essential operations in farm
management
There is noelassof scientific studies, connected
with rural pea Suits, more interesting and appro
priate than these of the different branches of nat
ural history, such asbotrusy, mineralogy. geology,
entomologyokc. The library and reading-room,
which every farmer who has children should
provide for them will be all the more Interesting
for the collection of minerals, the specimens of
dried plants, Or the cases of insects which it may
contain. Skillful young men and boys will con
struct these Cmses with their own hands. • A
farmer's son.whoese h rbarimn contained four
teen hundred species of plants, not possessing
much pecuniary means, purchased the paper and
bound -wills ibis own hands the nine neat and
thick folio volumes which contained the speci
mens. This Only not be
usually necessary,
but
the more yokang people learn to manufacture
and help themselves, they will not only become
more sk il lful'and less dependent on others, but
will ecquirefin interest which mefely purchased
objects will act give them.—Country Gent.

Pkanting Peas Deep.
Deep pla nting is not generally resorted to, un
der the impression that the seed will rot in the
ground. This is a mistake. Peas covered six
or eight inches deep, will produce twice as much
as those cord but an inch, they will (=thine
flowering Icibger, and the vines are more vigor
onsand do hot lie down, as is often the case
when shallqw plantings are made- We have
tested this matter, and therefore know from ex
perience that if it is desired to get a large crop.
the seed thirst beburied deep in the soil. A
suitable plate giound which has been enrich
ed the previous...y(lm was deeply plowed in
the fall and again m the spring, and put in fine
tilth. On the other half the plow was wank
beam deepnd the seed Battered at the bottom
of the furrow. In this way one•italf the piece
was gone OVer and afterwards merely leveled,
leaving theiseed at least eight inches below the
surface. Ile peas that were plowed an were a
little longer 'in making. - _ their appear . tince, but
they-shots lestd-of the others, the •vines were
mare thrifty and vighnotis end produced treble
the quantity of -those in the two inch drills by
their side. The seed used was of the same lot,
the Champion hf England variety, and the, soil,
time of planting and culture, (except the man
ner of puttmg intwere precisely the same for
both pieces. This experiment convinced us that
peas Ilcatriili best is deep planting; and we hive
repeatedly:had our attention called to the fact in
obstlving clifferent crop_ s and learning the man
