devoted chiefly to the -education of gentlemen for
the "dentine and Indushial professions, and when - we
reflect how many of the highest occupations of this

is not surprising that the polytechnic course should
belast superseding the old routine of- LCtin and

ecclesiastics, has remained almost unchanged for
centuries. ,
Nor ie it surprising that men of profound scholar

movement, should hasten to identify themselves with
it, and to employ their talents and erudition in itsc

The 'Territory of Jefferson.
The Territory of Jefferson is the ;latest bit& in
the family of the AmeriCan confederacy. The Mes
sage of the Governor to the Territorial Legh-lature
is published. . The heart Of this Territory is in the
Rocky Mountains, between the 105th and 106th le
trees of Weat longitude. Hitherto it bas been in
cluded in Yantis; butte wilderness of five or six
hundredzones Res , between - like Initabited part of
Ranges and the inhabiteiiiegion of the Rocky Moue:
tams,_ and a separate government is required.—
. Whether the "provisional government," whose or
ganization we announce to-day, will be recopized
and sanctioned by Congress, We are unable to, say.
At all events; Uis the first step of a goiernment,
and •it is probable the region referred' to will
be blown forever -as "Jefferson." It , shows a
serf. impoverished inventive faculty, when a com
munity has to use a name already immortal, and 'al
. ready used to excess over the country. „But
American frontiersmen are rarely - imaginative : they
can bad States', -and care little about the proper
naming of them.
Jefferson ITeritoT7, lying between . Kansas and
Utah, will have a most interesting position, and an .
important one In the dereloPement of our country.'
