If we look at the crops which "don't pay"
among us, ten chances to one that the "root
of the matter" Res in Water Stagnant in the
Soil—which; in many ways, is prejudicial to
the growth of crops. In-fact, a soil which
has no escape or outlet for the water which
falls upon it, save by evaporation', can not be
made to produce a paying' crop. In a dry
season, it is baked and bard Lin a wet one,

Einimrnoss IN Scuoin.Q:—A memorial,
signed by' sixty-five Principals of_ Grammar
Schools in New VW city, has seen present

effects of the annual exhibition of the writing,
drawing, and needle work of pupils or those
schools. These teachers say, it is no just
test-of pyogress tn.ile in the branches thus
attended to. that it results in injustice to the
Pupil., and that it draws disproportionate at
tention to these blanches of study.' Also, it
causes estrangement, bitter feelings, un
generous rivalry among the withers as well
as among pupils. The, memorial - is strong
against this display, and the ceremonies at
tending it. Good, indeed. The practice
must prove injurious especially to children
naturally endowed with large approbative
ness and small benevolence. - There are high
er- motives'than competition, holier feelings;
than rivalry with which to influence children.
Besides, the affections area sheens of

tesche7r may sway the pupil according to his
