est. .Mr. Landreth frankly tells the Public
that the business of seed, distribution by the

that do very well in Europe are attply un
adapted-to our climate, and , so worse, than,
nothing. The-carelessness or quackery of
this Government "seed-buying (business had
already been, repeatedly hinted\at in numer
dus'lgrieultural journals, some of which have
even gohe to, far as to charge that the pur
.schase and distribution had degenerated into
a mean job for lining- the_tockcits Of the lime
tionaries concerned in it. k 4 the written
or published quackery of Commissioner Holt
that has proved so intklerablr to Mr. Lan
. dreth..' . His' superior knowledge of the busi
ness has enabled him to detect it, and his
pen has laid it bare, with an application of,
caustic so scorching as to be quite out of
place as a fertilizer yet capital as.a dressing.
The Pennsylvania Horticidtural Society
; has specifically charged that the majority 'of
seeds distributed by the Patei4t Office were
such as previous experiench had proved ,to
be of little or no value ie. this country, and
so common as to .be had 'at eery village
store. The present Conanrsoiiiner him se lf;
has distributed roots and bulb's such as can
be had at any auction, and - grafts that exist
in every nursery. His attention has been
direeted,to 'these abuses, but his vindication,
now grappled with by Mr. Landreth gives
little promis,e of• their being corrected.—
Speaking of seeds of the Brassie& tribe, such
as Cabbages, tutnipS, dm, the Commissioner
says that they are more valuable when rais
ed in Europe.. Mr: Landreth emphatically
contradicts this, and 'his lifelong experience
and ,undoubted integrity will go very far
• With the Public.
Mr. Landteth follows up -hip denial with a
well-timed reproach: •
." Are - you not greatly in error in permit
ting your office to . decry the preduce of your
country `I Is it not enough that all who are
, similarly engaged with- -myself should con
tend unprotected egainit foreign competition
and thcompetition of the Patent office, with
the p,ublic purse and the public mail at its,
command; but that you should proclaim, in
- an 'official paper, that which is absolutely un
supported by facts 1"
• The teals that foreign cabbage seed is
never imported except when the crop fails
here... Even then, Mr. Landreth says, that
not in one solitary instance that has come un-._
der his notice,baS this foreign-seed produced
a head of any value, except of early cabbage.
, It is quite as-bad.with turnip seed.
" " Even the ruts bags, frOm English seed,
'tholigh usually pure, sometimes grows' with
an elongated, crown (" neeky.") Besides, it
must always, of necessity, be one year old
when, planted, while the American ripens in,
• season for sowing the same year—a matter
of importance at the south. An advertise
ment of a well known New:York geed house,
now before me, quotes all varieties of Amer
- lean turnip and•.ruta baga seed at fifty per
eel* higher than the imported—certainly not
Itecguse the foreign is Letter, as you ,so confi
dently declare."
' At a meeting of the Philadelpllia Agricul
-tural Society, Mr. Landreth exhibited
~ fifty=-
= two specimens of turnips, all raised by him
. from Eqopetin seed, including three. varie
ties from the Patent Office. ' The greater
portion proved to be decidedly inferior to
tbe old kinds raised in this cohntry, and two
only were considered worth propagating.
He says, "The fact admits of no disput- that
English seed is Of but little value when sown
under an American sun.". He charges the
Cominissionerbroadly, saying :
" Not only. flee you flooding the country
with old and ilikarded varieties of seed, but
are actually importing from England . "turnip
turnip
secd.of a variety which originated on my
. own grohnds, which 1 , specifically named,
(adopted-abroad,)-and of which 1 . distributed
upwards of six thousand pounds raised by
Myself last-season."
This is fiiirly running the 'seed into the,
'grt und, and putting the Commissioner, in
. stead of the seed; through a regular course
of sprouts.' .
Wby,sthe people ask, is this extraordinary
abuse-of money and power mtLinued in the
1-- doings of the Patent Office? Why are thod
...sands annually squandered on tee purchase
~•and distribtltion of , foreign seeds, some of
which 'turn out to be the vilest weeds? . Mr.,
, Landreth lifts the veil, and closes -inter-:
esting letter by revealing the secret. When
Jildge Mason came in a Commissioner, Mr.
'Landreth Faked on"bim, and representedito
him the folly and'evil of this proceeding.—,
The-Commissioner admitted. that Govern

draw tears from Mr: Bigler ? Ittuit-not the
women . at 'home 'be complimented - with some
thing for their' gardens? for, though having
no votes themselves, they .pead powerfully
with. those who have. Such was the pressure
that Judge - Mason yielded, sent a clerk to
London and Paris in pursuit of seed under
difficulties, and he spent near #30,900 at a
single 4ted-store, when varieties of 'infinitely
grestervalao might haVe been had at home.
'The practice has since ''become chronic, and
should be abolished-, root'and branch. Mr.
"Landreth's brief exposition shows conclusive

Pacts for Mechanics and Laborers who are 1

It is. well known that our Government,
through Capt. Meigs, has just Closed a con
tract With Mr. Lawrence Myers, of Philadel
phia, for a large lot of iron pipes for the wa•
ter works at Washington; which' works are
being:built at the expense of the Govern
ment ;
.it is also known and acknowledged
that said Myers, is the agent, in this ease ; for
a - large Scotch iron establishment and that
the water pipes for our own Cap4al are octa
-1 ally to be made in Scotland, while thouiands
of our own mechanics and latorers, engaged
in this kind .of work, are on. of employment.
It is also known that the price the Govern
ment pays is actually higher than the Messrs.
Starr, of Camden; N. :i. '

Britain. offer to take this whole contract (at
a hi g t.,r price, mark,) and deliver.it here by
1 5 ,4 Octolnir next, when it is at once given
..i.them, and our manutlicturers, though offer
ing lower, are to stand idle, because it might
he troublesome to divide the contraet. We
should think that such would have been the
I- preferenc6 of our riders in these dull times,
especially, for our own people, that no such
„pitiable excuse should be offered..
--Captain Meigs is to,blame ; first, for not
di% iding this contract so that several of our
founders could take it, and second, for giving
it to Mr. Myer* who has so small a foundry
that every one who knew him was well aware
that he could only fulfil it by subletting it;
in the specification it is provided
," that the
Contract shall not biT sublet or assigned."—
Any blame:in this matter after this rests
with the Democratic Policy, and the Demo
cratic voters who, after triumphing over the
Protective POliercnow find theinselves suf
fering for wok nitd.bread, while their own
money is being sent, by their own g.overft
'ment, to employ the work people of•another
nation whose 'manufacturers have been built
up by the continued fostering care of their
Government; but . to the filets:
We have taken some pains to place this
transaction before our readers.in its true light
and havhroeured copies of the specification
for tAs work which we will keep in our of-
free, to show those interested in the subject.
The weight of the castings which our Scotch
friends are to make for us amounts to over
thirteen milhons ofpounds, and will cost us
about *260,004. To those acquainted
with the busineis it is well known that the
cost of making a ton of iron : or pipes is near,
"y entirelY in the labor, the only thing to be
bought - of the capitalist or rich man of this
country being the Coal and Ore leave, after
this all is labor. Now, the• right to take
from the earth the materials to make this
whole job would cost about seven thousand
dollars,•and if we allow that the manufacturer
here makes a profit of five per cent., (a doubt,
ful case,) this would be thirteen thousand dol- •
Jars more, leaving two hundred and torts
thour.and dollars to be divided among our
own work people. • At a dollar.per day, here
rre two hundred and - forty thousand days'
work, or in other words, employment for
three thousand men from the Ist of July to
the Ist of October, when the pipes are to be
completed. Now, if three thousand men
\vere set to work, instead of doing nothing,
how many articles would they buy, made by
other workmen, such as shoe-makers, tailors,
4e., and sold bylarriTers, store-keepers, and
others ; thus the two hundred and forty thou
sand dollars would be used over and over
again to the advantage of the community,
when the work was done,
We ask •our working people to think of
these facts. We, should like them to call at
our office and see the specifications - of this
mammoth job taken from them while actual-`
ly suffering from want of work; these are.
no fancy sketches, gotten up tor_politteal pur
poses, burare filets and cannot be denied.—
We challenge the Gazette to publish them
and explain them, if possible, to the working
men of our town and country ;. his sophistry
and nonsense may avail him in some cases,
but these 'facts are so simple and easily un
derstood that he dare not publish them.
