SHORT AliTl6.s.—For the first time in
our lung experience,: we hear a com
plaint against short - articles. -Long' articles
have been the bore-ore Malkin of readers,
the death of it thousand- periodicals, as long
speeches haVe ruined a thousjud
land broken up hundreds of societie;s. it is
the easiest thing in the world to write a news.-
p'aper to death, or to make • one's self dull
and the resi!er. sleepy. All that is required
is long.articles in the one m.se, and the use
of all the words One can'diiute his ideas with
In the other. No - one whose thoughts are
not precise and clear can ever- write short ar
ticles. Anybody -can Make long ones.
11. F.;.writing from Lowell, Vt., says: "
like -Life Illustral?d pretty well, although I
think that most of its article# are rather too
ihf,rt." 'We presume IL, F. intended - this
remerk . aS a complaint, but.he could not have
paid us a higher compliment., The best aril
:cies, neighbor, always semi the shert&4:—
.Who ever knew • the "Fourth - of Initelien
.denee,” or the "firec of New :Year's,' to be
as long as other drys?
A gOOl story al ways ends too Aeon for us.
\V invariably come to the "finis" . of dgood
book in "short meter." We never eat just
enough of a very goal dinner 'Without expe
riencing something akin to regret. that we
cannot- eat more. One ought to rise from
the perusal of a'newspaper, as one - should
from a meal of vienials,-always with . a good
appetite fora little more of the same sort.
'We shall' continue to mike short I.rtieles

" Life" than-, be dwindled to the shorte-st
span.

Sudden Death.
.
'Great excitement was oemsioited among
our citizens on Tuesday morning last by the
reported sudden and mysterious death, at the
ht tel of John M.'Umphred, inithlivillag,e. of
Mrs. Sarah.,Nelson, wife of George Nelson.
'Mrs. Nelson. had retired bed nbput 11
o' . 6lock Monday night apparently in her
usual health, follAiweel, shortly after, by her
husband. During the nigh', however, it
seems t•he uas seized with .violent sickness,
and the firstatitirnation her husband had that
anything unusual had Omer:led, was in the
morning -upon, rising, when he found her in
sensible: Dr. Rogers was immediately sent
fur, but before his arrival death had-inter
vened. _
• Opinions were: Conflicting as to the cause
of , her death. &roe supposed that she had
talc( n an ovt, rdosei of medicine, or that a mis
take had bren made by one of our druggists
-in • fi lling a prescription fur 'tier the previous
.evening, white others pronounced it a cage of
deliberate suicide. Later in the day, it was
reported that.she was not dead, but in a state
of insensibility or stupor.' Those attending
hei• said that thee had discovered evi d ences
of vitality—that the pulse continued to beat,
but so tainily,,as to be barely pereeptibtl—
and that the retained nearly -the
worn:lib' of .a person m perfect health. The
doctors, however, pronounced her deati ; and
so opinions fluctuated" between. the decision •
tif bile and the a,severations of the other,
until. last night, when nodoubt remained that
ale was dead.:. • .
