06e of those strange vigils that occur oc
casionally at critical pointslie the legislation
of., this cadnity, occurred last night. The •
House - of . Representatiyes at Washington
'sat from 12 o'clock noon, yeaterday, till half'
past six e'elock this morning-an uninter
tupteti session" of eighteen hours and a half: '
The pro-slavery and anti -slavery parties found '
themselves at issue on' a point which might
involie.the whole controversy between - tliern.
The finti.Lecomptonites wished to some to a
vs)" te.,,sin ; referring the Presidettes Kansas
tiles - sage.. The Lecoinptonites feared such a
votemind by trivial tnotious and ineffectual
efforts to adjourn; contrived 'thus to protract
the aessien t till, all
,parties being wearied out,
a motion • be Mr. Quitman was introduced
by unanimous consent enkadopted, by' which
the whole subject was (deferred till Monday, •
when a vote is to - be taken Without further ,
delity.,..The teatesti"and its ',result, seem tel .
indicate a -conse"lotisna, of, strength on
the ' part of the "anti-Lecomptenites, and a
corresponding consciousness of -weakness on
the part of the Lecomptonites , which argue
well toe the cause of freedom and poptdar
rights. , , . .
_.• The -great incident of dus extraordinary
session took place at about:two o'clock this
morning, when 'Mr. Lawrence M. Keitt;, a
ttiemtsC from South Carolina, and one of the
champions of Nest ent Buchanan's policy,
undertook to settle t o Kansas question by
introducing a South. rolinia9 argument:— •
In other words, OnMr. Galusha A. Grow,
.. „1
Republican inembqrom the 'Bradford dis.
trict of Pennsylvatiia,' was walking dow i kan
aisle on the Democratic side of the House,
Wh:ch is perftelly ircesto all members, Mr..
Keitt insulted him insvile language, and or.
dered him hi , his own side of the House:—
Mr. Grow refused' to obey, when Mr. Keitt
seiied hintly the throat. Mr. Grow released
himself, and struck away his assailant's hand.
Mr. likitt ka g4i r, seized fiim,Amtwas again
thrust aside, He attacked km .a third time;`
'when Mr.G row, -whoae ;forbearance had been
remarkable, found himself compelled to lake
decided ineit§ures,• and • knocked Mr. Keitt
Mown. ' Au unparalleled scene of 'confusion
ensued.- • A general fight,, in - which some
twenty or thirty members were intermingled,
took place,• - and finny, by the aid of the,ser
geant:at-artne, order was mitered.
• The flew Hall of Representatives has thus
been for the first - time a s ne of riot:, Tiis
graeeful and mortifyin this is, we rejoice,
that the•first step wa aken, pot
.by a man
from a fre'etate, b t -by the special oracle
of South Carolitia, the intimate- friend and
wearer of the mantle of the late Preston S.
Brooks. The first insult offered 'and the first_
blow struck in the"new Hall,. were fret* Law
scum M. Keitt. We rejoice, too,. that he,
'received a lesson, thatlhe *ill remember from
a Pennsylvania .repregentative, who, after en
(hiring his insults" and violence:-.iri a manner
that shows how he revolted at the idea - of be
ing engaged in a quarrel that might disgrace
Congress, at last, by a decided but
.necessary
btowlaid the chatopibn of the sham Chivalry,
low in the midst of his felliois.• There was
no bluster, no bullyism in his conduct, though
he was assailed by blusteri & and bullyism of
the worst order. Ile knew:his- rights and
he, kticrw• his strength ; and lie - could have
treated Mr. Keitt in •no other way than he
adopted, unlss he had been very much rnbre
or very much less than a man.l, '
It is proper to add that all who arc person
ally acquainted with Mr. Grow 'know hit to
be a gentleman of great amiability of temper
and extraordinary self-control; that these
qualities are recognized by, men of all - parties,
and that although he iseegarded as a firm
opponent of slavery -extension, he has never,
until this occasion, been treated with disre•
'spect by Southerners, who all saw that .he
was a gentlemin and 'emitted tq be treated
as such, whatever hi's political opinions-might
be. In.this knowle4,ge of hi's character his
friends find• new proof, - ;in addition to that
furnished Icy eye-witnesses of the in
the House, that he must have acted 'with
great forbearance, and only struck Mr. Keitt
.when it.was necessary as a m-itter, ,of -mere
self,defence. .
, j
E
We. cannot but believe that the moral ef
fect of thisineident in Congress will be-tavor:
able to the cause of populat. rights. When
the suppOiters of the President and his poli-
Cy resort to insult and violence, in place of
argument, it shows a palpable *eaktiess, a
thorough unsoundness' in their cause. We
hav'e had-:strong confidence that on taking a
vote. •on the Lecumpton Constitaton c there
- would be a majority in ake House againstsit.
This Nth is now strengthened, for such Nor
thern Democratic members as have been
waveting,in their support of the Administra.
tion - on this question, will speedily decidd
against supporting it, whea . they And that one
of the modes'of argument adopted - hv its
special champions is blackguardi - sm and rut
fianiSm. The South, too, will discover a new
proof, in ‘ addition to that furnished in the last
Coniress by Mr. Burlingame, that there is
more- amontk Northern members than
they had •cotinied on, and perhaps a little
Wholesome restraint tray be put upon their
bluster and bully ism. Shocked as see have
been at the disgraceful scene in the capitol,
we are not without hope that good may-arise
out of evil.--Philadcfphiz Bulletin, Fef. 6th.
Butter—luatmeineuts to Improve its Quilit%
A few tiard. facts are of more importance
than many theories or bare assertion s.
, It
haiboen often asserted that much of the but
ter btought?to,this market was of inferior
quality, and Thence its low price. Some of
thbutter-makers in the country have thought
us disPosetl_ to cry down the quality to cheap
en the price. - It is not so. IVe would glad.
ly say all the butter offered for sale is of su
perior quality. We cannot say so because
it is not so. Listen to a little actual conver.l
cation with a I butter commission • merchant,'.
