Shadow and Light. -
barkness enveloped Creation. Earth hung

even then the Spirit of the Holy One 'was
moving to and fro upon the waters. - Wafted
over - the 'turbid waves, a still, small voice
rang through all Chaos with a soft clear echo,
--:" Let there 'be light;" and the dark. un
fathomable shadow that hadrso long lingered

A calm refulgence stole over the waters.
Very beautiful ! looked the earth, with that
lovely smile oflight diffused over it; and the
mountains that reared their lofty heads to the
sky, seemed proud of the radiant corona'
that crowned the M-
"And the motning stars sang together for
joy."
Gradually the day waned. The shadows
of night stole over the Waves, although scarce
ly perceived was their approach, so softly
and silently they enveloped Earth in their
dark mantle. The flowers folded their tiny
leaves and slept, while in their dreams floated
visions of resplendent light. Perfect peace
rested over earth; and through the air echoed
the song of the celestial choirs as they chant
ed praises te" God on High.",. Nature slept
Calmly until the returning more should we

The.order then established by divinity has
-ever thus continued ; shade and light alter
nating and intermingling ; one enhancing the
beauty of the other—the shadow giving out

ting that though the true path, may be dark
ened, yet it leadeth to the Celestial City.
Day may give us gladness; but it is night
that leads us to reach aboye earth, and hold
communion with Him " who bath no might

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.
Itcrottrasr Isorfuertos.—For some five years past,
Mr. D. M. Smyth, of Penns) lvania, (now of this State)
an ingenious and scientific mechanic, has concentrat
ed Lis mind and means upon an invention at length
perfectly successful, and for which letters patent have
fun been issued by the Government of the United
States. This invention is knoWn as "Smyth's Self-
Acting Bent-Lever Platform Scale,h and as this is
the first public notice of this useful and'vahublo im
provement, we shall take the 'liberty of expressing
ourselves freely upon its merits. The platform of the
scale is about - 12.'by 18 inches:, and .the whole scale
is about S inches high and weighs entire only abult
25 pounds, while . it has the extraordinary capacity o
weighing any object from one ounce to four hundred
'pounds. Its form is compact and-convenient, and'is
applicable to every purpose for which scales of any
.kind are required. Under the platform and attached
to the leverage is suspended a weighted ann or pen
dulum. To this pendulum is attached an indicator,
which, together with the pendtilurn, the instant any
object is placed upon the platform moves from its
centre of gravity to th.) point indicating the exact
weight. The scientific principle upon which it acts
admits of no inaccuracy or change, and a given pres
sure or weight upon the platform must always carry
the weighted arm and indicator to the same point...L.
The principle beyond doubt is the correct one, and'
that it has been properly applied in this instance, the
lucky inventor has left no room for doubt. lie seems
to have attained perfection itself—at least so fir as
Platform. Scales are concerned, and to have combined
in a remarkable degree an invariable scientific prin
ciple, "known of all Men," with compactness; con
venience, strength of form, durability and accuracy.
But 'the great and Important feature In this Scale is
the fact that beyond all these merits it possesses the
additional one of , being cheap, and within the reach

others, we have been favored with an examination
of the new and valuable invention (recently patent

of his work, and that he has attained perfection
