The fate of Governor Walker re

their career by an affiliation with the Border

embarrass the Administration, and to tell

As a remedy fora disordered cur

National Bank. Better try a purely metallic
currency first. .If that does well the country
will be satisfied. It it does badly, there will
be an end of clamor fur it. As the case now
stands there is a specie currency for office
holders and goieniment contractors, and a
paper currency for the people. The domi

the specie party, while they reap all the ad
vantages, if any,, 'which result from paper
money and commercial credit.

The deceased was horn in Gibson, Suaq. Co., and
removed to Carbondale about three years since.. He
was a worthy member of the M. E. Church, which he
joined under the ministry of the Rev. Mr. Evans, in
the rear 1833. The disease of which he died was
the lung fever, which terminated his existence in less
than a weeks time, and his spirit returned unto the
God who gave it. Although his friends would s have
liked to enjoy his, society longer ' yet God in his
providenee. saw fit to remove him from them; and
we trust he is where the Wicked cease from troubling
and the weary are at rest. His remains were con

vices were attended by the Rev. S. Barnes, who
preached to a large audience from these appropriate
words: " Blessed are the pure in heart, far they

THE PAPER FOR YOUR FAMILY.
NORRIS & WILLIS'S
ROME JOURNAL for _l_B5S
PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT #2,00 A YEAR.
THE HOME JOL - RNAL hu become universal.—
There are few fimiliea of cultivated habits—(few
of those who seek' to enliven and make home the
most intelligent and attractive place)—who do not'
now receive it. It is read, . we believe; wherever
run the gold threads of domestic happiness and true
moral refiuetnent, which are woven so thickly into
the stronger and coarser web of our country's indua
try and energetic prosperity. The Home Journal is
the speaker to the hearts of thia busy' nation, in the
hours given to happiness Mid relaxation.
The first number of tlei new series will he issued
on the first of January nett. New subscribers can
be supplied from that date; but immediate applim
tion will be necerteary fdr Such as desire to begin at
the beginning. A home is hardly complete, we think
we may safely venture to say, without the Nome
journal, which, besides being a chatnicle of the
times, abounds in intelligence designed to enliven an
American Home. Its editors (Geo. P. Moneta and
N. P. WILLIS) devote their entire time, skill and ex
perience, to the task of - giving, each week,"everything
worth knowing.. They particularly keep an eye on
all the whim and novelties of the day. The utmost
pains are taken to pr sent the facts and outlines of
all news. In the literary departmeta, we aim at
s ketches and readsble criticism, and in our conden
sations of the prOductions of the vast newspaper
world of Europe- we endeavor to avoid the tiresome
and the local, ar:d'transfer to our columns the pickof
English information and brilliancy, while we endeav
or to select with a true sense of pure
_morals, true
Wit, and genuine humor.
The new-feature for the coating year is one that we
have long thought of presenting to our readerse—the
.Comuusinesnexce of four very brilliant leennen who
send w repdarty the Gomm. or ens GAY WOULD.—
We have grudged exceedingly the keeping of these
most readable matters to ourselves—feeling certain
that it was precisely the Society ,_gossip which our
eubseribers required as 'efferveseence to the other
wise brimming cnp—an, with some di ffi culty, we
.have obtained die conse nt of our fair correspondents.
It was only on one condition, however—the i nt -pa.
ta, sir each, should be stficy preserved. 'We agreed
to this ; brit, as it was important to distinguish be
tween their several Letters, we ventured ,to suggest
name de plume, 6441 as we thought would be some
what descriptive of their several veins of humor. The
four ladies will therefore be introduced to the readers .
of the next volume of thd Home Journal, as Mrs. JA
PONICA JONES, Mrs. AMELIA - RATTER, Miss LOTS*
Nevem, Miss JIVSTELLa SUSIMORZ. And from these
—the four most brilliant persons of our city acquain
tance—the charming Letters will be duly forthcoming.
Every one-known howl tea-table or evening circle
is enlivened, by the coming in of an intelligent man,
who knows all the one ideas afloat, and tells them,
'briefly, and gayly, and off-hand; in the way of ordina
ry convenution.! Such a person gives you the sub
stance of the daily papers, in three or four sentences
—tells you' the plan any moral of a new book in a
dozen words—gives the essence of a sermen, the
core of a pubfic speech; the key to a public charac
ter. the spirit of an article in a review, the novelty in
fashion, the last turn in politics—all riefly, and all
without detail Or flummery--leaeirig it with you, as
material for your own discussion and goatip. This
is just What we,propose to do for the Home Journal
for 1858. We mean to jot down, for our mikes in
the fewest words possible, every new' idea that falls
in our way. As we read, as people drop in and talk,
as we look about in our walk'', we shall ,be on the
look-out for ideas and novelties—giving their in the
briefest shape. ' Formerly, we used to lay each mem- ,
oranda aside, to write about if we should find time—
now, we shall give them to our readers, re misers.

DAILY TELEGRAPH FOR -THE SESSION.

Tsifgraph . is now in the
THE Harrisburg Deity
second year of its existence. It was started hurt
fall rather as an experiment, an.l till Succeeded be
yond the most sanguine cep...et:ado:ls of its publish
ers. It has gradually won its tray to public feror, un
til it has placed upon a firm and sore basis, and
Is now one of the permanent " Institutions" of the
Capital. It has been Especially conducted in all its
departments with an eye sin to the public good,.
aid its gradal aMtateady rfterlft or'pattenitryge-ims
beena gratifying evidence of the public appreciation.
of the labors of the publishers* make it what it bi, a
reliable record, of the public events of the day, loaf
and general.
It shall be the effort of the publishers try tontinue
it in the spirit in which it has pus far been conduct
ed, to add , to its general' and local interest, and to
merit its steadily increasing patronage; and should
its increased patronage in subscriptions and advertis
ing be commensurate with their hopes and expecta
tions, it is their intention to enlarge it about the first
of January next, by the addition of four more col
umns. This will give us additional room fiur our ad
vertising patrons, which is becoming very necessary,.
without trenching upon the apace allotted to the
reading matter; As an advertising medium the Pd.-
graph is already one of the most desirable in the in
terior-of the State. and is daily becoming more and
more so. During the sessiontrof the Legislature es
pecially is this the Lam, as the full reports of Legisla
tive proceedings given in its columns, renders it a de
sirable paper in every part of-the State, and insures
it a wide circulation.
During the approaching session of the Legislantro;
it is our Intention to make the " DAILY Tst.taaarn"
a correct and reliable esponenkof the doings of the
Legislature of Pennsylvania. With this view, a
corps of competent Reporters will be employed in
each Rouse, and a full, complete, and accurate re
port of the proceedings will be given every 'day up
to 'the adjournment of the morning sessions, einbrac
ing the details of the busineasof -the session, sketch
ea of: debates on all important and interesting quer
tions, and such editorial comments as the importance
of the 'subjects, and their bearing upon the public in
terests may suggest.
. .
The course of the paper will be strictly neittra/ in
ID°Utica, the aim of the editors being to give fair - and
impartial accounts of the doings of the Representa
tives of the people, leaving_th • .nstituents to
judge of the action of their public to for them
selves, on the review of the proc'eedia
_a, as they are
fairly presented to them through our columns.
The'session will be one of more than ordinary im
portance. The derangement of the currency, and
the peculiar position of the Banks, will require, or,
at least, will excite much legislation, and will, in con•
sideration of its important bearing upon the general
basiness prosperity, be a question of absorbing public
interest. It shall be our province to present to the
readers of the Tefegrctkoh full and impartial records of
the legislation upon this and all other subjects.
Owing to the derangement of business affairs gen
erally, incorporated companies for 'manufacturing,
mining and other purposes, will also require much
legislation, and all persons interested therein cannot
fail to be bencfitted by a careful every day reading ef
the proceedings on such subjects.
AU public documents of importance emanating
from any of the State departmenti, or from either
branch of the Legislature, will also be published in
our columns at the earliest date possible.
Business men throughout the State, who desire" a
correct knowledge of the doings of their representa
tives during the sessions of the Legislature, and we
know there are many such, do not properly appreci
ate the Telegraph. ThrOugh its columns they. can
obtain this knowledge, and we hope to see them
avail themselves of the opportunity it affords them to
obtain comet and early infoemation. We know if
they oncexeceived it they would not again do with
out it.
' The Telegraph will contain ' also Tbe very latest
news of the day, domestic and foreign, bytelegraph.
and the mails; and will be a perfect mirror of the
news throughout the world.
The tocat department will be attended to as usual,
and will give a faithful record of every thing, of inter
est occurring in our immediate midst. The faithful !
teas and ability with which this departmenttuis been
conducted heretofore, will be a sufficient guaranty to
our citizens that their immediate interests will not be
neglected.
The Telegraph will be published every evening
