' EXTRACT . Prow-Andel Welitterr i anyesauth Rock Ore lioa,' Delivered at P/ymestA, December RS, .1 I deem it my duty, en this occasion, to:ing est that the land is notwhollY free from the contamination of a tra ffi c, at which every, feel -, ing of - humanity must forever revolt;--Ithean - the African slaverrade. , Neither public sen timent, nor the law, has-hitherto been able entirely to put an end to thie odious and a ' bominable trade. At the moment when God in his mercy has blessed the christian world with a universal peace, there is reason to fear that, to the disgrace of the christian name and - character, new efforts are making for the ex tension of this trade by subjects and citizens of ehristum states, in whose hearts inhabits no (Nentiment of humanity or justice, and over , whom neither the fear of God nor the - fear of Man exercises a control. In the sight of our law; the African slave-trader, is a pirate and a • felon • and in the sight of Heaven, an offender far beyond the ordinary depth of human.guilt. There is no brighter part of our history, than that which records the measures which have been adopted by the government at an early day, and at different times since, for the sup pression of this traffic; and I Would call on all the true sons of -New England to - cociperate with the laws of mau l and the justice of lleay. en. If there within the extent of our knowledge oilnfitterfee, any participation this waffie,, Jet us pledge ourselves here, upon,. the rock of .Pltimouth, 'to extirpate and de: stroy it, It is not fit that the land of the Pil •- grupashould bear the shame longer.- 1 hear chi ;Quad of the hammer, I see the smoke of the furnaces where manacles and fetters ere • still forged .for human limbs. I see the visa - gee of those who shy. stealth sand at midnight labOrii this - work of hell, foul and dark, as may _become the artificers of Such instill tneuts of misery and torture. Let that spot be pu rifled, or let it cease to be of New Englarid. Let it be purified; or let it be set aside from the christian world,; let it be putout ,of the circle of human sympathies and human re gard; and let civilized man - henceforth have no communion with it. , • ' I would' invoke those who fill the seats of justice, and all who minister at-her altar, that they execute the whOlesonap and necessary se verity of the law. ^ I invoke the ministers of our religion, that they proclaim its denuncia • Lion of these - climes, and add its solemn sanc tions to the authority of human laws. .1f the pulpit be silent whenever or wherever there • may be a.sinner bloody with this guilt with in the hearing of its voice, the, pulpit is false to its trust. I call oh the lair nierchant, who has reaped his harvest upon the seas, that he =Oat in scourging from those seas the worst pirates that ever infested them. That ocean, which seems to wave with a gentle, magnifi cence to waft the burden of an honest Cam mem, and fo roll along its treasures with a V. conscious pride,—that ocean, which hardy in ()natty regards, even when the winds hare rafted its surface, as a field of grateful toil,— Asilitt, is it.`to the victirii of this oppression, whin hi is brought to its shores, and looks forth upon it, for the first time, from beneath chains, and bleeding with stripes ? What is - it to him , but a wide-spread prospect of suf fering, anguish and death? Nor do the skies smile longer, nor is the air longer fragrant to him. The sun is . cast down fr om heaven.-- An inhuman and accursed traffic has cut him off in His manhood, -- or in his-youth, from ev ery enjoyment belonging to his beiffg and eV ery blessing which his Creator intended for him.. - The cliristian communities send forth their emissaries of religion and letters, who stop, here and there, along the coast of the vast continent of Africa, and with painful and te dious efforts mak some almost imperceptible progress in the communication of knowledge, and, in the °general improvemint of the na tives who are immediately about them. Not thus slow and. imperceptible is the transmis sion of the vices and bad passions which the subjects of christian states carry to the laird. The sliive-trude having touched the coast, its infhience and its evilsapread, like a pestilence, over the wholeconthient, making savage wars more savage and more frequent, arid adding new and fierce passions to the contests of bar- pursue this topic no further, except again to say, that all christendom, being now blessed with peace, is bound by everything which be. longs to its 'character, and so' the character of the present age, to put a stop to this inhuman ana ilisLrraceful traffic. Fishing with Birds. Lient Habersham, in his entertaing work • astitled "Mv Last Cruise, w telates a singular opearrenee: 4 hi a Chinese river that disem begins m the Yellow Sea, he saw a long, low raft of bamboo moored under the leaofa hes v pier, on which were a Chinesefishernian, a basket, a paddle, and five duck-like birds, ailed "fishing cormorants." The fishertntm soon reached out his hand towards the birds, the nearest of which at once Waddled up to him mid ;stepped into his open palm • be smoothed his feathers with his right. hand, bent his inouth to his arched neck for a mo 'neut. and thek put him on the edge of the raft. There the bird , dipped his bill' into the ,water once or twice, snapped his bead from c side to side, and ended by divin e ) , suddenly -into the turbid stream that washed his feet. After being down ten or fifteen seconds, he suddenly popped out of the water with a good wised fish in his mouth, and swimming to his master delivered up the prize. The fisherman stroked him down as before r uttered a few en, contagui . g words, and the same operation was repeated.. Another bird made. one or two unsuccessful efforts, when r the master took him hack on the raft, slapped him soundly on the head, and threw him angrily down. That cormorant made tracks for the other end, and lookedquite ashamed. The training of birds for the purpose of fishing is quite common in that part of China, and is often made a valu 'able source of eniolument. PLATIOIN ICALIL THIS INVENTION claims niperlokty over every' other, in the following respects : In the invada ble scientific principle involved, and upon which it acts; in its undeviating accuracy; in its lightness and. strength; in its wonderful capacity, convenience of form.' and applicability teevery purpose for which Scales of any kind are required; iu its perfect sim plicity, in the *beanie of env complication liable to vitiation, or to get out of order ; and, finally, in the important fact, that this scale can be afforded at a bout oire-aiird the cost of any other Platform Scale, of like capacity and accuracy in use. And poems sing in ;an eminent degree, all these merits, this Invention is conreded to be:one of the most useful and valuable ever brought before the public. And coming, as It does, within the reach of all, it cannot but find en unprecedented sale and undivided market amongAittiers, hannielieepers, mechanics, merchants, &c. everYwhere. to the exclusion of :every other weighintapparatus. The invention of the Scales and the Many invalua ble improiements which we: have made within the past few months, have brought them to such a de. gree of accuracy, that they may be safely relied up on in every trumactfon of weight. - ManufaCtured and for sale-only by R. H. RATON & CO. Mannar), Sun. Co., Pa., May 13, 1857. OPINIONS OF THE PIIESS. • Iwroarakr Isvarnos.--,For some five years past, Mr. B. M. Smyth, of Pennsyli-ania, (now of this State) an ingenimis and scientific mechanic, has concentrat ed Lis mind and means upon: an invention at length perfectly successful, and forwhich letters patent have just been itst/ed by the Government of the united States. This invention is known as " Smyth's Self- Acting Bent-Lever Platform Scale," and as this is the first public notice•of this useful and valuable im provement,, we shall take. the liberty of expressing .ourselves freely upon its merits. The platform of the scale is about 12 by 18 inches, and the. whole scale is about 8 inches high , and weighs entire only about 24 - , pounds, While it has the eitraortlinary capacity of weighing any object from one : ounce to' four hundred pounds. Its form is compact-and convenient, and is applicable to every purpose for which scales of any kind are required. Under the platform and attached to the leverage is suspended a weighted arm or pen dulum. To thLs pendulum is attached an indicator, which, together with the pendulum, the instant any object is placed upon the platform mores from its centre of parity to thz point indicating the exact weight. The scientific principle upon which it acts admits of no' inaccnmey or change, and a given pres sure or weight upon the platformonust"always carry the weighted arm and indicator to the same point.— The principle beyond doubt is the correct oue, and that it hati been properly applied in this instance, the lucky inventor has left no room for doubt. Ile seems to have attained perfection itself—at lea.-t so Ea as Platform Scale ate concern*and to have combined in a remarkable degree an invariable scientific prin ciple," known of all men," with compactness, con- . venience, strength of form, durability and accuracy. But the great and important featurein this Seale is the fact that beyond all these merits it poss e s ses the additional one of being cheap, 'and within the reach of every ,family:—Albany Err; lour., Jae. 2.8, 1858. ' We hare examined this new: Platform Scale 'and concur in all that is said by the Journal. The prin- ciple is at once simple and beautiful, and ensures perfect accuracy, while the price will be three times less than of the ;eales now used.---4/bany I.lrpress. v----. Y ~. %MU . S PATENT PLATFORM SCALE.-WC • hare ex anined, this new invention: NOthing can be simpler or more completely do eloped Than the principle up on shieb its acts. The platfortnAvhich .sustains the weight lifts a Pendulum, suspended and loaded at the end, through an arc of ,a circle ; and the indicator points out, _upon the graduated- circumference, the etactiveight: In other platfoym scales the mure of avoirdupois has to..be ascertained by movin a loose-weight on a beam, as on a steelyard, till it its mti the precise point. Smyth's invention is n self-work ing one, and indicates at once, and to the minutest fraction, the figure. Br attaching the weight cal the end of the pendulum,, the scale. becomes multiplied by fives. or tens: by rele asing ' the weight it gives instead of pounds.' For household purposes, it is as cheap and far better than steelyards; and is finding the way to all well regulated kitchens where the, receipt book, with its prescriptions of weights and proportions, is used—.Atias and Argus. A Naw Inta--If anybody doubts that this is an in centive age, they should call and examine Smyth's Self Acting Bent-Lever Platform Scales. For t simplio; ity of design, and economy of space, they take prece dence of any scales that have yet been, invented.— There is one peculiarity about this scale • it posses sea 'very little machinery, and can never make a mis take so lonfi'. as the laws of gravitittion continue. Smyth's Male has another advantage --its small cost. --Knickerbocker. . . , 1 1 / 2 7716 RAM! PLATFOI.II Scone.—Thin new and valuable . invention was on exhibition at our State ,Fair just closed. Nothing In its department received more attention or was more generally admired or ap• projed. This mak, possessing the extraordinary menta eoneeded , to it at the East, cannot but be ear ' ly valuable, and must, we think, come into t Ve use. e e Albang Irseiring lowed publishes the above, and adds: This scale (Smyth's) was also exhibited at ,the Stale Fair at Watertown, sod notanly received every attention given it in Ohio, but carried off the firstiend highest premium awarded—ei diploma and silver medal.—Clreelead (Okie):roarmel. "pieta's Slas-Acrruto Bzwr-Lavia Pcmona Sca4t."—The fundamental prinCiple of every impor tant ',invention has been very simple. In ha simplici ty isthe elements.of its worth; its uselislness and a daptability. Inventions of complicated movement and visionary ',theories have never perforated the ob ject sought to be obtained, for with adaptabilty, ad crane, and dirabiEty must be combined cheapness. All of these desideratums are involved in the inven tion 'recently patented and known as M Smyth's Self. Acting Bent-Lever Platform Scales." The sale in que.4ion, front its contraction on the principle of gravitation, tai never liable to be out of order. It :nest lievforni ha wcirk thoroughly, because the laws of na tare govern it, In size the scale is a pigmy, but for capacity it is wonderful, weighing any object from one ounce up to four hundred pounds. It can be reg. 'dated by any one who looks at it but for a moment. As their cost ip but a trifle, they will speedily be as ' haTispensably necessary in the household cafenciar as any other wells; article of daily use.—Eye.Transcr flit) lIIIPORUNT AND VAL-L*IBLE INTENTION.-:-AUIOI4 others, we have been favored with en examination of the new and' valuable invention (recently patent ed,) 'known as Smyth's Self•Aiting Bent-Lever Plat for"{ Scale.* Jri. I) IL Smyth, the ingenious in ventor, has spent some five years in the perfection of his work, aid that be has attained perfection there seems but little doubt. This scale is construct ed upon a scientific principle Which knows no varia tion or change, 'and hence Its weenracy is beyond question. Its capacity and strength is imp • • - ed, while its torch and the principle involved make it convenient and appEcable to all purposes requiring scales of any description. - It is_free from any corn plleation liable tb variation or to get out of order. The great and linportant feature, however, of the scales made under this invention, is the fact that they can be afforded at, about owe--fourth the cost of any other platform male of Me capacity and accuracy in - the world. 'The scale we have seen (a sort of pocket edition as compared with otter platform scahm,) has the wonderful Capacity of weighing any object, from one ounce - up to -Anr hundred pounds.
