Porthonotary Sam Matt Fridy. !
J. R. McAfee, Esq, Deputy Secre
tary of the Cuinmc nwealtb, and one
f tbe fditors of the Oreenabnrgl
Tbiuuki and isaxd has this to say;
of his lute associate aud cleik,
Protbqnotary Fridy : It is a great
thing to have competent and roliable
clerks in all tbe Departments of
Ooverriment. bath State and Nation
L In tbe several departments at
Harrisbnrg tbe clerks, as a general
rule, are not ouly competent, atten
tive, obliging and honest, but they
are gentlemen in every venae of the
term. Some of those have rendered
themselves so ns-ful tbat they have
boon kept in position for many years
and nndur different Administrations.
Hut amongst them all there is none
more competent, wore obliging or
more familiar with tbe duties of bin
position, or wbo has boen more faith
ful and bouoet in the discbarge of his
duties than Sam Matt Fridy, of Lnn
caster county, wbo, for tbe past fif
teen years has ocenpied the position
and pel formed tbe duties of Com
mission Clerk in the office of tbo
Secretary of the Commonwealth.
No one during these long years ever
found Mr. Fridy soar or disagree
able. He seemed to live in prc-petu-al
sunshine, enjoying life to tbe full
himself and making everybody
around him happy. As a penmen he
has few equals, and for prompt at
tention to tbe duties of bis desk he
has had no superior. But tbe peo
ple of Lnncastor county (we mean
tbe Ropublicans of Lancaster county,
as tbere are only a handful of any
other kind of people in that county),
last fall elected him I'rothoootary of
that county, and heuce tbo Secre
tary's office at arrisbnrg, will lose
oue of its best clerks. Mr. Fridy (or
ns he is sometimes called by his in
t invito fuiends and follow clerks,
'tba Lancaster County Dutobmau'').
will make a most accurate and eQl-
ckot LYotboujtary. Tiiat is also a
position that should be made to ter
minate only when tbe incumbent
proves himself incompetent, ineffi
cient or lucking io moral character. If
Matt Fridy provos himsolf as faith
ful iu the Protboaotary's office as he
has been in the Secretary's office,
and we have no donbt but ho will,
the business people of tbat county
ought to demand his retention, at
least as long as he has served the
State in the position which he has
now vacated. We hope they may do
so.
