THE DUTY OF THE HOUR.
If ever there was a period in the
history of tho Republic u ptrly
when it bohoove l it to adhere in
flexibly to the support of it candi
dates, that time is the presont. IJy
every means which it can employ,
the Pomocratio party is seoking to
gain control of that government
which it helprvl during four years
of bloody strife to destroy, and every
patriot who loves his country should
bo on his guard and not only frown
down, but do his part iu overthrow
ing that organization, so d.iugcrous
to tho peaco and prospority of the
republic Two yours ago Mr. Steng

against the government. Whin tho

Electoral Commission, and was rea

civil war. Although conscious of
the damnable moans employed by
Tildon's Agents to steal tho electoral
voles of several States, and subvert
tho choice of the people, as declared
for Hayes, Mr. Stenger has nctod
with the Potter Commilteo, whoso
solo purpose has been to eject Mr.
Hayes from the Presidential Chair.

Congressional nominoo of the Ro

amply demonstrated by his spoech

day oveuing 7is effort on that oc
casion was that of a statesman, and
gave docidod gratification to all who
ueard it. Mr. risher is not only an
able champion and exponent of Uo
publican principles, but above all, is
an incorruptible man a man whoso
namo is stainlois and above ro-
proach. His iutogrity has novor
boon impeached or bronirht into

him to tbo hearty Bupport of voters

so long ns tho harrowing memories
of that strugglo survivo. Iu tho
hands of tho Republican party who
dofended it from the assaults of tho
armed hosts of tho Democracy, the
government is safe beyond perad

which ore blazoned upon its banners,
