Mrs. Shunk. the widow of Go?ern
or Francis 11. Shank, died at the re-
sidence of ber son Oanpor Chunk,
sear Willisrasport, Md. on Friday
a week, aged 85 Tears. She was tbe
daughter of Governor William
Fiodloy, and was a native of Peters
township, this County, where she
Rrew to womanhood. She was an
excitant woman, and always popular
in IIarnnbnr, where much other
life was passed.
In tbe llarribiir -If. of 11, the
other day, a bill passed second read
tag to prevent ladies from serving
as waiters at drinking saloons. It
is seldom that ladies engage in this
occupation ; but we suppose tbe bill
inc. u Joe the sruootn-iaood ses ot all
grades. Tbe bill to forbid Sunday
exhibitions of every sort, where an
admission fee is charged, failed in
the House on Tuesday for want of a
constitutional majority there being
97 rotes for and 51 against its pas-
sge.
The figures of an official state
ment of tbe business of tbe Pensyl
tania lUilroad Company on all lines
east of Pittsburg and Erie, for Jan-
nary, 1878, as compared with tbe
aame month in 1877, show an in
crease in gross earnings of 112,730 i
a decrease in the expenses of $150,-
677. All lines west of Pittsburg for
the month of January, 1878, show a
profit over all habihtier of II 43,
165. This is quite encouraging, and
tells favorably for tbe steadily im
proving condition of tbe Pennsylva
sia Railroad Company.
