Pear Readers. I guest a letter from
my pen about once a year will not do

Hgreable place to bo This part is es

wood and coal to bo had hero, and
nlentv of land ran be boutrht here too.
Emnoriit is almost in tho centre of
Lyon Co. and it the county scat of tnid

of tiro rrossinj; of A. T. t St. F. and
M. K. & L. K. R'e. the Wate normal
school is at tho head of Commorciul

ria. It is said lo bo tho finest street in
Kansas. Tlio old building of the State
Normal was built somoU or 9 years
ago, and was found to bo to small to
accomodate all tho students making
application : to about 3 years ago the
building of a new edifice was project
ed, and a year later, built, costing p0,
000. The ground tloor is of hewn stone
and the upper stories are of brick, with
a mansard roof. It can be teen for
mill's outsido of the city. Its standing
on an eminence cives it its command
ing appearance. The old building is
still standing. : It is behind the new;
it is built of rough stone a stories nign.
The nublio schools are well conduct
ed bv Prof. Davis who shows himself
competent to superintend some rl50
Dtinils. There are 10 teachers employ
ed to do the publio school teaching.
The teachert are all good representa
tives of the gentler tel. Lpon the
whole Emporia coutains a corps of ex
cellent teachers.
Thesvstem of teaching differs a good
bit from that practiced by the Snyder
Co., teachers. I think the teachers in
Snyder are a little ahead of the toaah-
ers of Kansas in tbeir ways ol toacn-
in. ...
Emporia Is almost a model city in
teninurance. The temnerauce move
has been making aome decided steps
towards abolishing the tale of intoxi
cating liquors. Committees have been
called, aud elections have been held
resulting In the closing oi an saloons,
which fam sorry to say, were not a
