This yoar is becoming noted for
the frequency and violenco of its
storms. Reports of destructive tor
nadoes cotao from all points, and on
Saturday night a week, a storm
that (MiHsod through parts of Ohio
and Indiana caused the death of sev
eral persons and tho destruction of
all kinds of buildings. Five mem

storm in Chester county a few days
ago which passe i through tbo neigh

Erclidonn and Marshalltown, de
stroyed buildings, crops, orchards,
rroves, bridses and railroads, in its
path of sixteen miles in length and

man was carried two miles and was
seriously injurod, a colored lady was
killed and her three children are
missing. It was a sort of whirlwind;
having too appearanco of a hnge
funnel, and it tore trees up by the
roots, twisted railroad iron like
straws, caught np a radroad bridge
one hundred feet long and threw it
into a field, and sacked tho Brandy

Our General and the Workinomcn of
England.
General Orant was no doubt sin
cere when he told tho representa
tives of the workingmcn of England,
who waited npon him with an ad
dress of welcome yosterday, that ho
was prouder of that demonstration
than of any of which he bad been
the object since his arrival in Eu
rope. Indeed, our ex-President
so well in the littlo be said to the
dologation as to tnsko it evident that
his words came from the heart. He
recognized iu the poople be was then
addressing men who might hereafter
be citizens of the United States
The attentions paid to him by royal
ty and the oourtesios of the aristoc
racy Lave been welcome and gratify
ing, the more so since they empha
size the respect which the 'ew
World has won from tho Old, and
bear the character of a national as
well as an individual compliment
But they are only the passing civili
ties of foreign friends, who admire
the American soldier and respect the
Amerioau goverumeut as represent
ed iu the person of its ex-President.
Tho demonstration the trades of
England made yesterday was some
thing more than this. The United
States gathers its strength from the
muowing tide of luuor, from tue im
luiiMuuU who come with their strong
arms and tried skill to aid in .build
ing tap our industries. General
Grant fcpoke yesterday with the
comrades of our American army of
labor with those who tuignt one
day become themselves citizens of
the liepubiic. As sucu bis sympsv
tby went ont toward them, and our
reticent ex President grew eloquent,
as indued he always is wnon bis sub
iect reaches his heart N. Y. Mer
