On Monday night, April 18, In Bea
ver township, Mr. Oiristian Harman
was awakened by a icream from hi
children. U went to ee the cause
and found a large black bnake coiled
in a ring along side of hi little one.
The children escaped. Mr. Harman
killed the nak.
Exhibition. Ira Fltson'a school
closed at the West Adaninburg school
home, with a grand exhibition on
Wednesday evening, April 18th, 1877.'
The Middle burg String Hand was pre
ent and enlived the occasion with their
excellent music. Notwithstanding the
inclemency of tho weather, it was a
grand success. The houso wis crowd
ed to its utmost capacity, and a large

bition closed, and all were well pleased
with the way in which it was conduct

How to Explode a Lamp.

the explosion of kerosene lamps, the
philosophy of all of them being that
tho flamo may pass down tho wick
and ignite the vapor which accumu
lates in the upper portion of the lamp,
This vapor is not explosive, as tho
term is ordinarily understood 1 but
when it is confined to that the gaso
resulting from iu combustion cannot
escapo freely into the open air, the
vessel conflnlng it will be shattered.
The ignition of the vapor may be
a follows :
1, A lamp may be standing on a I tile
or mantel, and a slight pull of sir from
tbs open wiudow or door may eauie an
eXplotlon.
'1. A lamp may betaken np qulekly
from a labia or maatel and tuatantly im
