Twp , ltoclt Island county, 111. The
gentleman is quite wealthy and had
couccaled in kis houso about 8 I'i 010

to rob and murder the old folks.
The Nephew, Kdward Westphal with
his son, a man namod Brown, nud a
Chicago desperado named Kerns,
proceeded to old Wentphal'u houHO
at midnight. Thj news of his in

Marshal and three ofnaers conooated
themselves in tho bouse. Tho burg
lars boldly entered the house, and
thon ensued a dosporate tight be
tween tho robbers aud the oifioers.
The Marshal was struck on tho head
and an offioor was shot in the arm.
Kerns had both arms broken and tha
others were more or loss hurt. AU
the robbers were arrostod. The plot
was to enter tbo houso, chloroform
tbe old people, obtain tho money, aud
then set tiro to tho houso, that it
might ' oppoar that ' Mr. and Airs.
Westphal had died in tho flames, and
suspicion of foul play bo thus divert
ed. That they fully iutended to car
ry out this plot was shown by their
having a bottle of chloroform and a
oan of kerosense with them. '
