with a brilliant intellect and indomita

law and order, and esteemed for his
many virtue. He eufrered the most
excruciating pnin from the time ho
received tho Injury until he expired.
The perpetrator of this barbarous deed
i Oeorgo Wenrick, native of that
place, and a young man about 23 years
of age. The announcement of the
tragic affair created the intensost
excitement. Il'enriek wiu arrested
and conveyed to tho eovnty lail nt.TiiU
dlemirg. ne ropy the following de
tail from tho "Sehnsgrovo Times." be
lieving them to be correct inasmuch as
tho editor had tho advantage of full in-
rormation or tho nature and character
of the testimony elicited beforo tho in
quisition.
Dr. Wa-jenseller has for several years
had in his employ a hired man named
William iVerta. This man it appears
had one had habit. Ho freonentlv In
dulged in tno tree use ot Inpior, which
rendered him unfit for tho proper dis
charge of his duties, and also set a bad
example to tho Doctor's two sous, two
hoys nearly grown up and at that age
when boy aro must apt to ho led as
tray, by the vico of intemperance. The
Doctor had lat'ii striving for several
years to induco this man to abandon
this evil habit, hut his labors in that di
rection seemed fruitless ; for, when the
man could not obtain it directly from
the bar himself, ho had some runners
who would buy the liquor for him by the
bottle and deliver it to him secretly.
Soino of theso bottle runners became
known to tho Doctor, and this man
Wenrich wa ono of them. He notifi
ed him about a year ago that he must
quit It, but the evil practice continued
and on Saturday evening soon after the
Doctor returned home from a visit to
his patient ho was told that his hired
man ns up at the Keystono drunk
again. Tho Doctor immediately start
ed up and met Wcnrieh and ,1erti on
tho pavement at tho Kevstone. He
charred Wenrich with again furnihing
liquor to .Vert, whereupon II enrich
cursed and sworennd called him ut il
d d liar. 1 ho Doctor told liii'i not t
call him a liar again, when II "enrich
used more violent languao tliaiiliefon
and repeated culling him a liar am
challenged and dared the Doctor. At
this instant the stabbing occurred. The
Doctor clapped his hands to his sidi;
and called out loud, "Folicc! Police
I'm stubbed! George H enrich stabbe
mo." Ho started homeward, anil sonic
ono rollowed and helped him home
nearly a square distant. He was help
ed up stairs and to bed. and Dr. Hot
tenstein wn immediately called in and
examined tho wound. As soon us hi'
was informed of the nature of the wound
he himself pronounced it fatal, ami said
ho knew he had to die; and Dr. H it
tenstem did tho sniuo. Dr. Priestly anil
ir. .iccay 01 .virihtimiicrlulid were
sent for. and they came and gave about
the sumo decision. Ho suttered verv
much whenever ho wa conscious. The
weapon used was a pocket knit'o with 11
blade about for inches long. The blade
entered the left sido and under tin
sloi.iHCh, anil by turning tho blade up
wards or in an attempt to rip, a holt
was eui cicar through tho under part
of tho stomach about tho size if an old
targo cent allowing some of the con
tents of the stomach to pass out.
