Isvestioatiox Wanted. Late devel
opnienls seem to render it more than
probable that John Baird who was
found dead near his hou.io in Centre
twp., two weeks since, came to bis
death by a blow inflicted by a jierson
who is prowling n round that vicinity.
At any rate tho matter needs further
investigation, and here is a chance for
our sheriff to show whether he has
any detective abilities or not. This
person is supposed to be one who is
needed in Northumberland Co.. to tin
ish a term in jail. At any rate this
chap has been seen in the vicinity and
was known to have made threats
against Mr. Baird and also against a
brother of the deceased who resides in
another part of tho twp. At the house
of the latter a watch is kept at night, so
well convinced arc thu family that
thero is danger of another murder be-
tmr committed.

Milk as Medicine. Tho London
Milk Journal suvs on the authority of
Dr. Benjamin Clarke, that in the Kant
indies warm milk is used to a great ex
tent as a spccilic lor diarrhoea. A pint
every lour hours will check the mot
violent diarrhoea, stomac-ache, iucipi
ent cholora, and dysentery. Tho milk
dio'tld never bo boiled, but only healed
sufficiently to bo agreeably warm, not to
urn io ui iiik. ,hiik wnicn lias iteen
boiled is unfit for uso. Tho writer cives
several instances to show the value of
this substance iu arresting this disease,
among which is tho following. This
writer says: "It has never failed in
curing in six or twelve hours, and 1
have tried it. I should think, fifty times.
Ihavo also given it to a dying man who
inui ncen subject to dysentery eighth
months, latterly accompanied by one
continual diarrhoea, and it acted on him
likea charm. In twodayshis diarrhoea
was gone, in three weeks be becamo a
hale, fut man, and now nothing that niav
hereafter occur will ever shake his faitii
in hot milk. A writer also communi
cates to tho Statical IHmetanil Uatrllt a
statement of the value of milk in twenty-six
cases of typhoid fever, in every
one of which its great valuo was appar
ent. It checks diarrhoea, and nourishes
and cools the body. People suffering
from diseuso require food quite as much
as those iu health, and much more so
in certain diseases whero there is rapid
waste of system, Frequently all ordin
ary food in certain diseases is rejected
by the stomach, and even ' loathed hv
tho patient, but nature, ever beneflcient,
has lurniHhed a food that in all diseases
is beneficial in some directly curative.
Such a food is milk
The writer in the journal last quoted,
Dr. Alexander Yale, after giving par
ticular olwervations upon the points
above mentioned, vix: its action in
checking diarrhoea, its nourishing pro
perties, and its action in cooling the
body, says: "We believe that milk
nourishes in fever, promotes iu sleep,
wards of delirium, soothes the intes
tines, and, in tine, is the sine qua non in
typhoid fover." Wo have also lately
tested the value of mtlk in scarlet fe
ver, and learn that it is recommended
by the medical faculty In all cases of
this oftnn very distressing children's
disease. Give all the milk the patient
will take, even during tho period of
greatest fever; it keeps up the strength
it the patient, acta wullou the stomach.
ami is in every way a blessed thing in
mis sicaness.
