p Aorlli Carolina.
The Hopnllieun victory in North
Carolina will be welcomed by the
country with greater satisfaction than
if the result had been announced up
At 1 A .a a
on mo tiny aiior the election. There
is something peculiarly exhilarating
in sho pleasure with which we watch
the discomfiture and chagrin of the
Greeley faction, after they have spent
nu entire week in shouting hosannas,
firing great guns and demonstrating
from the supposed result in North
Carolina that tho defeat of Grant and
tho destruction of tho Republican
party aro now inevitable. But
more jHTUianoiit sense of satisfaction
is tho great fact itself that Greeley
AndJ his hordes have been boaton
lisiiritroubly and shamefully upon
thoir very first battle-field. Tho
journals and leaders of that party will
of course try to underrate the impor
tance of the Republican triumph, by
showing that tho rebel faction has
obtained a majority in the Legisla
ture, and five out of eight Congress
men. But this will not do. In 1870
tho Dcntix'raU. carried tho State by
uto lumiHnuu majority, lins 7uar
the Republicans elect th- ir Governor
by a majority of two thousand, uiak
ing a elo.tr gain for tho Republicans
oi seven inouwtnd votes in two years.
AVs hare elcetod but three Congress
men in the State, but this also is a
pun of one, and a consequent loss for
uie Lxmiocrucy. -J he exact propor
tion of tho two parties in the Legisla-
iure uns not, at tins writing, been
ascei-tiincd, but there is reason for
believing flmt tho Republicans have
fninoa at least forty members.
Kesults of this kind cannot be ex
plained away, denied or rubbed out
They prove in tho most positive and
conclusive manner that the Republi
can party baa largely iucrcasod popu
larity in tho Stato, and that it will
triumph in North Carolina in Novera
lmr. Greeley has received a stagger
ing blow in the first skirmisli, and his
forces will bo demoralized and dis
heartened. Grant has obtained tin
nier most unpromising circumstances,
a handsome endorsement which will
jrive to him and to his party renewed
strength, with which the greater vic
tory muy eertoinly be won. The Re
publicans of North Carolina deserve
the gratitude of tho nation for their
"brilliant conduct of the campaign.

would undoubtedly do what tho chair

A correspondent of the New York

The State will undoubtedly go for
Gen. Grant in November by a huge
majority, Some of tho old residents
men who took an active part in the
secession movement have come out
strongly on the subject of local re
form, and by their influence are en
deavoring to reconcile their fellow
citizens to the existing circumstances;
Colonel w. !. Trenhdlm, a son of
Mr. George A. Treuholm, lata Secre
tary of the Treasury of the Confeder
ate government, has issued a pamph
let entitled "Local Reform in South
Carolina," in which he reviews the
condition of affairs sinoe the war, and
urges an acceptance ol tbe situation
counselling his readers to over
look the accident of color, and to
urge tho selection of auv man for
office on his fitness for the duties, re
gardless of complexion. lie asserts
that what all good citizens of South
Carolina need above other things is a
State Government capable of provid
ing for Uie material weliare of the
whole community and earnestly intent
upon doing so. Ha denounces class
legislation aa pernicious, and legisla
