IIUFFNAOLB. or cixtiivilu, AI-PITOI. CAMEL VIEFFENRACII, JACKac.l TOWNSHIP. October and .ovrmbtr. The kit that we can afford to do feat onr State ticket and yet carry the State for Grant has been nrpud with much persistoner, and lias Wn made to seem pbmoJWe enough to re quire full refutation and exposure. It does not follow absolutely, as txme eoein to think, that "as iun rjlvauia goes so goes thot"nion," yet there are so few exceptions that it may alrnont lc regarded as a rule. It ta tHwmiblo to elect a President witli ont tho rote of Pennsylvania, but it has so seldom happened that such an event cannot bo considt red prolml.lc. But there is another ralo to wluch there is no exception that as Penn sylvania goes in October, she goes in NoveniUT. It has never happened otherwise. In 1628, 1332 and 183G the Democrats carriod tho State in October, and had an easy victory in the month following. In 1S40, then was no State ticket to elect at the October election, and consequently no reiwbje test of tho vote. The' " nigs and Democrats each carried twelve meuiVrs of Congress, and the Totes given to the several candidates footed np, iu the aggregate, a smull Whig majority ; whilo on tho other Ltruil, tho Democrats carried the Leg islature, and tho jKipular vote for legislators footed np a small Demo cratic majority. It was, therefore, a drawn battle ; both Bides claiming a ictory, and both, therefore went to! work with a will to carry the Presi dential election. The result in No vember was a characteristic of the indecisive result in October the Whighs carrying tho State for Harri on by barely 313 majority. In 1844, the Whigs ran the gallant nd patriotic Gen. Markle for Gov ernor, and made a bold and energetic tand in his behalf, but he was beaten by a small majority, They struggled wtui au uiey energy to regain the State in November ; but tho govern or election had already decided their Xti the State went against Clsy by a largely increased majority. In 1818, the Whigs nominated Wm. F. Johnston for Governor, and at the October election he was chosen by only 313 majority. Xtt that trif ling majority dueided tho Presiden tial contest The Dotu-raU fought oianfully, but in vain, to overcome that small majority, and Taylor car ried the State over Gum by ten thou sand majority. In 1B32, the Democrats carried the October election by a decisive ma jority j and in November the State went for Pierce by an increased vote. la 13jC, the Repubhcans and Americans were united on the State ticket, although divided on Presi dunt A determined effort was made by them to toirry their State ticket but it was beaten over 8,000, and in November the StaU was Democratic, over both, by about 11,000. In 1C0, th Republican, afUr a Lard fought and bitter, contort, elec ted Curtin to the Governorship by a docinive majority, and the State fol lowed is November Ijt Lincoln by an' TOM- In 18G4, the muno result followed The Republicans carried their State ticket In October, and gave tho State to Lincoln in November with scarce ly an effort Iu 1808, General Hartranft was on tho SUilo ticket, as he is now, being then a candidate, for Auditor General. The Philadelphia Press had not then unlearned iU Republicanism nor lost its common sense, and earnestly con tended, all through that campaign, that if Hartranft wcro not elected, Grant could not be that it was mad ness as it is now to contend that tho State could go one way in October, and auother in November i and that every rote for Hartranft in October was worth two for Grant in Novem ber. It so proved. Hartranft was elected, and Grant carriod tho Stnto easily, although the Democrats made a determined rally, and urgod what tho J'rcft is now urging, that the re suit in October could bo reversed iu November. What tho Democrats contended for then, tho l'rtt is contending for now, and that iu the very teeth of its own iterated, reiterated re-reiterated asseverations. The whole history of political affairs iu ibis State from tho begining is against it Siuh a thing as reversing in November the result in October has never yet happened, and never will, because it never can. Tho reason is plain. Tho result of tire Stito election necessarily dis heartens and demoralizes tho defeat ed party, and their is no timo be tween October and Noveinbfr to re cover from this demoralization. Uov teu troops always light badly. Dis cipliue may bring them up to tho work, but they go through with it as a mat ter of routine, without heart or spirit On tho contrary, the successful party in October is correspondingly en couraged, goes into tho fight with renewed spirit and what is known ss the floating vote tho voto which waits in every fight to seo which Mdo is going to win goes in with tho successful party and helps it to an easy victory. All this is in the very nature of things, and tho phi losophy ol tiio rule is therefore clear. Besido all this is tho reflux result upon other states of tho voto in our state in Octolier. Tho peoplo of Ohio, Indiana, New Jersey and New lork look to tho stato electiou in Pennsylvania with an anxiety too deep tii find expression in word It m a great measure, settles the result in thoso states alto. If we carry the state for Hartmft in October, those states will be sure to follow for Grant in November; if ho is defeated they will all be rendered doubtful. Rr.rrnucANs of Pesnsylvasia 1 The election of Grant is in your hands. If you elect Hartranft Grant's elec tion is sure. If you suffer him to lo beaten. Grant's election is not only doubtful but next to imjiOHsibln, Do not lo deceived by the false picas of demagogues. 'What was trno in 1 WS is just as true now "a vote fur Hartranft in Octolr is worth two for Grant in November." "IlrROAn for Horrors Greeley and Grass Brown." exclaimed a drunken Philistino iu KentucLey. A pispatch from Madrid says tliat the release of Dr. Howard has been satisfactorily arrangei between tho Minister of Foreiini Aflairs and Gun end Sickles. A Liekhal Democrat wants to know "who is tliis Big Ruts Brown T" We beheve he belongs to the Brown fmn ily, and is running for soino kind of Hahti.et, tho Democrat nominee for Auditor (Jeneral. was so bitter a copperhead during the war, that he left the Methodist Church because the Minister proved that success might crown the Union nrms, and the Govermueut bo preserved from dissolution. Is 1859 the Richmond (Va.) papers published an advertisement offering twenty five hundrod dollars for the head of Horace Greeley, and the of fer has been withdrawn. The same poiiers now support him for Iresi- deney. Whether the price promised for his capture is to be divided among the Democrats who effected it or whether it is to be paid to himself on the ground of personal surrender, has not yet been determined. The seizure has been made, however, to the grout sorrow of hundreds and thousands of the old Abhtiouist's friends, who mourn that so cruel a tute should have overtaken '"n No administration ' before that of Grants had gigautio obstacles to overcome like those which beset the present from the hour of its inaugur ation. It had, first the evil effects of the Johnson rule to wipe out and in addition was compelled to conquer uie Jta-klux rebellion which followed thai of tho slaveholders.
