The Dutchman's Oysters. ,
" llafe you got seme of dot kind of oya-'

" Spiled oysters I Yea, we have a few
cans loft over from last week that I think
will fit you."
" How you solt 'em a dozen ?"
" Oh, I'll soil 'era right ; you may have (
all you want for a nlckle."
"Veil, den, mine goot frent, vill you be
so kind to pring me four dozen for dot
damaged lot?"
The oysters were brought, and the cus
tomer put them quietly down Into the pit
of his Btomnch, and, having finished the
job, he said to the restaurateur :
" Now, my very kind frent, you have got
soom good oysters, ain'd it?"
" You're mighty right, 1 have !"
"Veil, I takes a hafo dozen raw and
some pickles. "
Those were in turn served and quickly
put down on the top of those gone before.
But the restaurateur was troubled, and
when the patron came to settle the bill said
to him :
" Look here, pard, I don't like to be too
inquisitive, but blowed of I wouldn't like
ter know why you have took a fancy to so
many spoiled oysters and so few good
ones?"
"Veil," replied the man, "you have
been a goot frent to me, und so I told you
something. You see, it was dis way. Now,
I hafe got a tape-worm, my kind frent, you
understand, und efry time dot is the way I

One of the leading eldors of the
Pennsylvania Menuonites, 40 years ago,
was one Millor.a man of immense strength.
Passing a crowd of idlers at the court
house, he was stopped with the question :
"Miller, they say if one smites aMonnon
ite on oue cheek he will, turn the other. Is
thatso?" "That is true." The question
er hero gave him a smart blow on the
cheek, when Miller, turning the other
cheek, had it duplicated. This raised a
great laugh as the fellow turned away.
"Stop my friend," said Miller, "if you ha'd"
read a little further you would have found
another passage that we ulso hold by.
" With the measure that ye mete onto oth
ers it shall be meted to you again, and
heaping full,' " and, picking bim up bodi
ly, he fairly thrashed the wall with him.
tW Shortly after the battle of Prinoeto n
a witty Scotch fanner amused himself by
writing a humorous ballad upon it, which
so stung one of the officers who had be
haved very badly on that occasion that he
sent the poet a challenge to meet him at
H for mortal combat. The second
found the farmer busy with his pitchfork,
to whom he delivered the challenge of the
redoubtable hero. The good-humored
farmer, turning toward him with his. agri
cultural implement in his hand, coolly said,
"Gangawa' back to Maister Smith, and
tell him I bae nae time to come to U to
gie him satisfaction ; but that if he likes
to come here, I'll just do as he did I'll
run awa' 1"
C3T A little Vermont girl called at a
drug store and said : " My mother wants
ten cents worth of jumps." This astonish
ed the clerk, the child insisted that it was
jumps she had been sent for, but returned
to her mother for further instructions.
Very soon she came back, and said that it
was hops that she wanted.
tW Said a tipsy husband to bis wife :
"you need-needn't bl-l-ame me. 'Twas
woman that first tem-tempted man to eat
forbidden things."
"Thatwon't do," retorted the indlg-'
nant wife. "Women may have first
tempted man to eat forbidden things, but
he took to drinking of his own accord."
f3f " Corinne if you are living, do re
turn to your friends," writes somebody in
the New York Herald. They don't say
what " Corinne" is to do if she is dead. In
that case she is probably expected to reply
through the " Corinner."
tW The scandalous Washington Chroni
cle, says : " When Mary Walker reaches
Turkey we hope the Sultan, that absolute
monarch of all he surveys, will make her
take her breeches off." Mary won't listen
to auy such lusultau proposition.' She isn't
that kind.
12P Corpulent old lady I should like u

thinks he will make a joke) Yes ; will you

Lady Well, if you are a specimen of what
I shall experience In the passenger train
give me a ticket for the cattle train, by all
means.
