Bhwp on Oltl Meadows.
Mr. It. G. Hill, in mi nrtrlreRS before a
farmer's meetinsr at Norrisvillo, Vr.; on
Cotswold Blicnp, related the following in
connection with the elTect of sheep on
moadows :
To try the effect of ulieep ou my mowing
laud, I took a lot of about twenty ncrcs of
pretty dry ground that had not beeu
plowed for some fifteen years, but had been
occasionally top-dressed, turning them in
as soon as the grass started aftor Rotting
the hay off, and feeding in quite close.
In tho spring I turn them in on ploasant
days until they can go to pasture. This I
have dono but a few years. Tho grass has
improved both in quality in quantity every
year since thus managed. While cutting
the grass the past season, the bay makers
said they should think there had been a
heavy top-dressing of ashes applied, the
white clover was so abundant. I am now
satisilod by my own experience that the
sheep are as much bo fore oows to keep up
the mowing, as they are in the pasture.
To do this, we must have Blieep that will
slay where you put them, and that can be
easily handled. I can handle my sheep as I
can my cows. I can go myself aloue and
drive any one of my full blooded BUoon to
any part of the farm.
v Which Kind are You!
There is a class of farmors who are living
only to grasp more acres. Their farms can
never be largo enough, nor can their work
men or themselves over do quite enough
work. They cannot be satisflod with the
income of a farm, nor could they be with
that of any other business. But those who
understand that the highest object of labor
is not simply to make money, but to pro
vide the largest amount of the means of Im
provement aud innocent enjoyment the
world aflbrds, can make the pursuit of ag
riculture furnish more luxuries that really
contribute to our well being than any other
employment requiring an equal amount of
capital. Their farms are not so large as to
make slaves of themselves and their sons
aud their wives and daughters are not
woru out with incessant drudgery. Their
door yards blossom with flowers, their
tables are supplied with many varieties of
well-grown delicious fruit, their houses are
made cheerful by the influence of news-
. papers, books and music, and a taste for
tho pure and innocent enjoyments of life is
developed in their children. Here and
there a farmer's home exemplifies all the
contentment and happiness possible to a
race doomed to labor and disappointment.
To Farlfy Rancid Lard.
A correspondent of the Country Gentle
man writes : "we had some forty pounds of
rancid lard, which was valueless as it was.
Knowing the antiseptio qaulitles of the
chloride of soda, I procured three onnoes,
which was poured into about a pailful of
salt water, and, when hot, the lard added.
After boiling thoroughly together for an
hour or two, it was set aside to oool. The
lard was taken off when nearly cold, and
it was subsequently boiled up. The color
was restored to an alabaster white, and the
lard was as sweet as a rose." '
X3ST If a housekeeper or a housekeeper's
daughter understand the mysteries of the
kitchen, and the cook repels their presence,
then cook should receive warning. If the
ladles do not understand, then they should
learn, or else take warning. Far the great
er number of American women are and
must be and should be participants la
the details of household management. The
greatest comfort is found in houses where
the female members of the family, whether
from choice, from prudence, or from ne
cessity, take oversight of all parts of the
house, and claim a right to do whatever
they pleaso, and to direct whatever is done.
One or other of the motives above men
tioned should operate in every household.
, Insect en Cattle. .
A correspondent after having experiment
ted to bis heart' content with several kinds
of grease, tobacco, water, kerosene, ashes,
anguentum, etc., for killing lice on cattle,
has arrived at the conclusion that sulphur
sprinkled on the animals, and well rubbed
into tho tiair, and a tablespoocful glogor
in meal dally for a week, is the simplest,
safest and surest remedy he bus over tried.
,. Profit of Quinces.
An Oh loan, who has three-fourths of an
acre of quince orchard, from which last
year he Bold three hundred bushols of first
class fruit, spade the ground in the erring,
and scatter a peck of eoal ashe around
each tree, applying at the same time a
quart o salt, and another quart when the
quinces are half grown. ,
Iff Experiment recently made to Eng
land indicate that wagons are most easily
draw n, on all kinds of roads, when the
fore and bind wheels are of the name size,
and when the poll lie lower than the axle.

'I'.lw question is almost daily nsked, "What
in tho cause of the nupnrullclcd buckcss of
