Vortli Knowing.
Very often a screw hole gets so worn
that tho screw will not stay in. Where
glue is handy, the regular carpenter makes
the hole larger and glues In a large plug,
making a next for an entirely new hole.
But this is not always the case, and people
without tools, and in an emergency, often
have to fix the thing at onoe. Generally
leather is used, but this is so hard that it
does not hold well. The best of all things
is to cut narrow strips of oork, and All the
hole completely. Then force the screw in.
This will make as tight a job as if driven
into an entirely new bole.
Another hint of a similar character may
be useful. One often desires to put a sta
ple into a block of stone. The hole is
jnade, the staple inserted, and lend melted
and run in. But unless the hole is made
with the bottom larger than the top, the
lead will in time work out, if there is
much jar or side strain on the iron.
Besides, the lead itself is liablo to some
compression, which admits of looseness,
especially after being subjected to very hot
fires. A much better article is sulphur.
If this .be melted and poured in around
tho staple instead of lead, it makes a much
more durable job. Besides, it is often
more easy to procure sulphur than lead, as
every store keeps it that doals in general
variety.

Colored Wash for Fences.
The following, says the Massachusetts
Piovghman, is a most excellent, cheap and
durable wash fur wooden fences and build
ings. It owes its durability 'to the white
virrol which hardens and fixes the wash :
Take a barrel and slack one bushel of
freshly burned lime jin it, by covering the
lime with" boiling water.
After it is slacked, add water enough to
bring it to the consisteucyof good white
wash. . Then dissolve in water aud add one
pound of white vitrol (sulphate of cine,)
and one quart of flue salt.
To give this wash a cream oolor, add one
half a pound of yellow ochre, (in powder.)
To give it a fawn look, add a pound of yel
low ochre, and one-fourth of a pound of
Indian red.
To make this wash a handsome gray
stone color, add one-half 'pound of French
blue and one-forth pound of Indian red; a
drab will be made by adding one-half of a
pound of burnt sienna aud one-fourth
pound of Venetian red.
For brick or atone, instead of one bushel
of lime, use half a bushol ofj lime and half
alxixbel of hydraulic cement.

A savory way of preparing meat is iu the
form of meat-balls, made thus : Cold boil
ed or raw beef, or pork chopped very fine,
put Into a dish, together with eggs one to
each half pound of meat crumbs of light
bread soaked and mashed fine, a couple of
medium-sized onions, chopped (may be
omitted if not liked) ; season to taste with
salt if the meat is fresh ; pepper, nutmeg,
and allspice, and form into egg-shaped
balls with the hand. If too moist to form
well; add a little flour, and fry in plenty of
Said.
Preserving Eggs for Winter.
Pack them iu a clean vessel, with the
small end down, strewing bran between
each layer, then plaoe one or two thick
nesses of brown paper over the top, and cov
er with an inch or an inch and a half
of' salt Cover clone, and keep in cool
place, and they will be much better than
the old method of salting down, which al
ways hardens them.
tS" Beef toast is prepared by chopping
hue the remnants of beefsteak or cold
roast beef. It should, be warmed up with
a little water and seasoned with butter,
salt, and pepper. Slices of bread should
be toasted and laid on a platter, on which
the meat is to lie turned when hot.
tW Bri'4'1 fi liters are made by soaking
liiciului iimbs in milk overnight. In the
morning add an egg and salt and very
3Rtle Hour, as the thicker the batter is
tr.ade by the crumbs, the shorter and more
delicious they are.
tS" A bit of glue dissolved in skim-milk
and water will restore rusty crape; at least
so says one of our exchanges. Would that
it were as easy to restore weakly frames,
rusty uonsclences.debilitated love.and play
ed out constitutions.

The question is almost.daily asked, "What
is the cause of the unparalleled Mirers of
ViNECMii Bitters?" Our answer in, that
they removo the cause of disease, and tho
patient recovers his health. They are the
great blood purifier nnd a life-f?i vinpr prin
ciple, a perfect Itenovator and Inviejorator
of the system. Never before in the history
of the world lias a medicine been com

ing Congestion or Inflammation of the
Liver and Visceral Organs, in Bilious Dis
eases. II' men will enjoy rooiI health, let
them use Vineoau Bitters as a medicine,
and avoid the use of alcoholic stimulants
in every form.
No Tersoii can take these Hitters
according to directions, and remain long
unwell, provided their bones are not de
stroyed by mineral portion or other means,
and vital orpins wasted beyond repair.
(rateful Thousands proclaim Vnra
oar Bittebs the most wonderful Invigor

Ililions, Remittent, nnd Inter

in the valleys of our great rivers through
out the United States, pnpecinlly those of
the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois,
Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red,
Colorado, Brazos. Rio Grande, Pearl, Ala
bama, Mobile, Savannah, Roanoke, James,
and many other, with their vast tribu
taries, throughout our entire country dur
ing tho Summer and Autumn, and remark
ably so during seasons of nnuBunl heat and
dryness, are invariably accompanied by ex
tensive derangements of tho stomach and
liver, and other abdominal viscera. In their
treatment, a purgative, exerting a powerful
infl'ience upon these various .organs, ia
essentially necessary. There is no cathar
tic for the purpose equal to Dii. J. Walkeb's
Vineoau Bittkiss, as they will speedily re
move the dark-colored viscid matter with
which the bowels are loaded, at tho same
time stimulating the secretions of the
liver, and generally restoring the healthy
unctions of the digestive organs.

curative powers iu the most obstinate and
intractable cases.
For Inflammatory nnd Chronic

Blood, Liver, iCidnoys, and Bladder, these
Bitters have no equal. Suoti Diseases are
caused by Vitiated Blood.

effectually destroyed and removed. No
system of medicine, no vermifuges, no
anthelminitics, will free the system from
worms like these Bitters.
For Female Complaints, in young
or old, married or single, at the dawn of
womanhood or the turn of life, these Touio
Bitters display so decided! an influence
that improvement is soon perceptible.
