X Young to Travel. A few days ago
there passed over the P. R. R., on the Pa
cific Express going cast, two children, aged
respectively four and six years, who were
ticketed through from Yokohama, Japan,
to Liverpool, England. Tbey were the
children of an English officer who died at
the first mentioned placo, and were on
their way to their friends in England.
They had with them a letter from the
English Consul General, requesting the
railroad, steamship aud othor officers to
take cliargo of them.
Fatally Injured. On Tuesday last
about 8 o'clock, one of the bauds employed
on the local freight, was bo badly injured
while shifting cars near the furnace at
Newport, that be died about 0 o'clock that
afternoon. The young man's name was
Glenn McCauley, a resident of Ilarrisbuig,
where he bad recently moved and where
he bad a wife. The accident happened by
Mr. Cauley getting bis foot caught between
the rail and a plank, causing bim to fall,
and the car was so near him, that before it
could be stopped the wheels bad crushed
bim. lie was taken to Newport, when
every care was rendered him, and after bis
death bis body was taken to Huntingdon,
where bis mother resided.
Another Terrible Warning. Sunday af
ternoon, Mr. Henry Fink, of Dover, was
out chestnutting in the woods. As be
went in bis buggy, be put his gun in the
box under the seat. Returning in the eve
ning be endeavored to extract the gun
from under his seat, taking hold of it by
the muzzlo. The cock was caught in the
operation, which snapped and discharged
the whole load into the palm of bis right
band shattering all of the eight bones of
the wrist and passing up into the arm
where it tore the flesh fearfully and broke
both the bones of the forearm. The injury
was so great that amputation was neces
sary between the wrist and the elbow.
Drs. Kerr, Ahl and McLaughlin performed
the operation. The suff erer is doing as
well as couJ be expected. TtUgram.
Run Off. The Waynesboro' Record says:
" On Sunday last whilst two young men of
this place. Haughman and Riroman, were
on their way from Mecbanicstown, in a
buggy, tbe horse took fright at a freight
train of cars as it was passing over a
bridge, and commenced running. ' It np
pears the lines broke, tbe young men were
thrown out, and tbe vehicle, said to have
been a new one, was thoroughly demolish'
ed. The horse which was captured be
tween this place and Monterey, belonged
to Dr. Bowls of this place. Tbe buggy
was from the livery of Mr. John 8. Funk
Tbe young men fortunately escaped with
but slight bruises.
A Bold Robbery A Safe Carried away and
Broken Open. Between 1 and 2 o'clock yes
terday morning the night hands at Winter's
furnace, below Mulberry street, on tbe op
posite side of tbe canal, beard a noise
which was later io the morning found to
have emanated from tbe operations of a
number of burglars in breaking through a
safe which tbey bad carried from the brick
office of tbe Winter firm to a place where
they could work without probable moles
tation. The office is located at the edge of
a basin In which a large number of logs,
grouped together into small rafts, are kept
The burglars entered the office from tbe
towpath and rolled the safe out of tbe front
door, evidence of which is seen in the
broken steps. Tbey then rolled their
plunder on one of tbe mfts, which they bad
drawn to the shore, and boated to a point
about 200 feet distant, on the opposite side
of the basin. Having selected a place
where tbe employees of the furnaoe could
not observe their operations because of ore
banks, etc., tbey unloaded the safe and
commenced chiseling it open, using a
sledge hummer and several other imple
ments which they bod stolen from the
blacksmith shop about twenty feet in the
rear of tbe furnace. The noise produced
by tbe sledge hammer blows was heard
about an hour by tbe furnace-men, who
suBpeoted nothing wrong.
Yesterday morningafter daylight the safe
was found with the bottom chiseled and
hammered out and the books and other
contents piled up near it. All the burglars
carried away were a few insurance policies
and two Pennsylvania railroad shares, uo
money having been kept in the safe. The
burglars first attempted to gain access to
the interior of tbe safe by breaking open
the door, but this work not proving satis
factory they changed their base of opera
tions and penetrated the sheet Iron base,
which was about an eight of an inch in
thickness. The hole they cut out is large
enough to admit the head of a man. There
are no evidences to show that powdor had
been used in opening the safe one of
Evans & Watson's weighing about half a
ton.
The office lamp was used in looking
about the room for plunder. The disordered
condition of things showed that the burglars
had been inspecting the contents, but noth
ing was removed but the safe, the object
of the thieves being evidently to Bteal noth
ing but money. Harrisburg Patriot of 21st

A iV'cw Railroad Order. The management
of the Pa. R. R. company has recently issued
an order bearing the official signature of
Thos. A. Scott, President, to every person
employed by the company in any capacity
whatsoever which is not only novel in its
character but worthy of general imitation
by similar corporations. It sets forth that
the company pays a fair compensation for
the time and services of its employees and
in return demands that they shall devote
their entire attention to the duties of their
respective positions. That they are not to
act in any executive or othor capacity in or
for any other corporation or to give their
labor to any othor firm or business. That
they are not to be interested in any way,
directly or indirectly in tbe supplies or busi
ness of tbe road, and that all emoluments
and profits accruing from any such employ
ments or interest, belong naturally to tbe
company and not to the employee, and are
to be turned into tbe treasury of the rail
road. In fact the company enters upon a
new and enlarged sphero of usefulness,
free from combinations that must, it
would appear, attach to alt great enter
prises in their early stages.. The announce
ment of these facts must have a vastly
beneficial influence upon the stockholders
interests. The policy of acting through
companies which were managed in connec
tion with the central controlling power of
so great a corporation as that of the Penn
sylvania railroad was no doubt rendered
necessary at the time whon the road was
begun, and muoh of the unrivalled success
and unprecedented growth of this company
was due to the wise direction of that policy;
but now it is able to stand above it and
needs no such help, all the best efforts of
brain and a muscle employed by it should
and must have but a single allegiance to
one central point of interest. That no one
may be aggrieved by this change of policy
strict conformity to it will not be made
imperative until the first of January next.
