Balky Horses.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals, puts forth a sot of rules for tlie
treatment of balky horses.
1. Pat fie horse upon the neck ; exam
ine the harness carefully, tirst on one Bide
and thou on tho othor, speaking encoura
gingly while doing so ; then jump into the
wagon and give the word go ; generally he
will obey.
2. A teamster in Maine says he can start
Hie worst balky horse by. taking him out
of tho Bhafts and making him go round in
a circle till he is giddy. If the first dance
of this sort doesn't cure him, the second
will.
8. To cure a balky horse, simply place
your hand over the horse's nose and shut
'Oil' his wind until he wants to go.
4. The brain of a horse seems to entor
taiu but one idea at a time ; therefore con
tinued whipping only confirms bis stub
Jboru resolve. If you can, by any means,
,givehima new subject to think of, you
will generally have no trouble in starting
'him. A simple remedy is to take a couple
of turns of stout twine around the foreleg,
just below the knee, tight enough for the
horse to feel, and tie in a bow knot. At
the first check he will generally go danc
ing off, and aftor going a short distance
you can get out and remove the string, to
prevent injury to the tendon in your furth
er drive.
5. Take the tail of the horse between
the hind logs, and tie it by a cord to the
saddle-girth.
C. Tie a string around the horse's ear,
close to his head.
The First Element or a Home.
T nAVAT aaur a n-nvmnnf. f nn ftnn f o v a man
or maid ; there was never a chair too good
for a cobbler or cooper to Bit in ; never a
liouse too flue to shelter the human head.
These elements about us, the gorgeous sky,
the imperial sun are not too good for the
human race. Elegance fits man. But do
we not value these tools of house-keeping a
little more than they are worth, and some
times mortgage home for the mahogany
we would bring into it? I would rather eat
my dinner off the head of a barrel, or dress
after John the Baptist in the wildorness,
or sit on a block all my life than consume
all myself before I got home, and take so
much pains with the outside that the in
side is as hollow as an empty nut. Beauty
is a great thing, but beauty of garments,
bouse and furniture is a very tawdry orna
ment compared with domestic love. All
the elegance in the world will not make a
homo, and I would give more for a spoon
ful of hearty love than for whole shiploads
of furniture, and all' the upholsterers in
the world could bring together.
Worth Knowing.
Dr. Glass, living near Qranby, who is
clearing up a new farm, has been troubled
with a number of big oak stumps. He had
heard that saltpetre was good for stumps.
Accordingly, about a couple of months ago
be sprinkled on the top of each stump
about a table-spoonful of pulvorized salt
petre. A fow days ago he set fire to these
stumps and says they commenced and con
tinued to bum until every stump was to
tally consumed, roots and all, that be was
able to plough without the least difficulty
over the very ground formerly occupied by
these large stumps. lie says some of the
stumps burned for foui or five days.
Farmer?, try the Doctor's remedy ; be says
it will not fail.
linked Hams.
Most persons boil ham. It is much bet
tor baked, if baked right. Soak it for an
hour in clean water, and wipe it dry ; next
spread a thin batter all over it, and then
put it in a deep dish with sticks under it to
keep it out of the gravy. When it is fully
done, take off the skin and batter crusted
on the Mesh side, and set it away to cool
You will find it very delicious, but too rich
for dyspeptics.
Wild Coffee.
"Wild colTee bushes are plentiful in Ania
dor and otlies countries of Califoruia. . Tbe
beriies are known to the settlors as "cat
berries," but are iu every respect similar
to the coffee of commerce. A Columbian
consul, who is intimately acquainted with
the cultivation pf coffee in South America,
is confident that the shrub is tlia gonuine
cofl'ee plant, and capable of producing
under cultivation a superior quality of
