IriffpnionsncRS of Prisoners.
In the Eastern Penitentiary have boon
added too more names to the list of attempt
ed escape Frank Mosor, of Syracuse,
New lOrk, undergoing a sentence of seven
years for burglary committed in Philadel
phia, and Jacob Heioholt, of Muncy, Ly
coming county, Pa., who is serving a simi
lar term for arson. Within a day or two
a break was discovered in the heating
room of the Penitentiary. The fact was
reported to the Warden, who began an in
vestigation which led to the discovery of
the facts given below :
Moser and Koicholt, were employed to
gether in a single cell at shoomaking. It
soemed that they some time ago conceived
the Idea of making their escape by the
sewer running underneath the Penitentiary
and roado saws out of the working knives.
They sawed through the floor of the cell,
then burrowed down and followed the
foundation wall of the structure until they
met the heating room, which they cut
through ; thence gained access to tho sew
er, along which they moved until the Fair
mount avenue entrance was reached. Here
they net an insurmountable obstacle in
the form of a trap which was closed, it be
ing a rule in the Penitentiary that the sew
er traps must be closed after the sewer has
been used. The men, fearing they would
be suffocated should they attempt to re
main in the sewer until the trap should be
opened, retraced their steps and returned
to their cell, whore they washed their
clothing and straightonod things up so
nicely that the authorities of the institu
tion, but for the almost accidental discov
' ery of the break in the wall of the heating
room, would have remained in ignorance
of the attempted escape, as they would
also of a littlo enterprise of a similar char
acter, which the irrepressible " Brockie
George" had in hie hand and was vigorous
ly prosecuting.
During tho search incited by the dis
covery of other prisoners' work it was
found that " Brockio" had been making
pretty fair progress in his endeavor to cut
through his cell, the " Dark Dungeon," in
which Brockie has been confined since the
discovery and frustration of his last at
tempt. In his latest effort Brockie, it was
found, had, with a common spike, which
he drew from the dungeon wall in some
way, cut down four feet into the solid
mason work beneath the floor of his cell.
Ho had managed to loosen some of the
plank of bis floor, and after working at tho
stone work, he would carefully replace the
planks and paste up the cracks and splinter
holes with a paste made of his bread and
water.
Itcslgus an Ofllcc.
John W. Ward, Mayor of tho little town
of Floreyvillo, in Mississippi, has tendered
his resignation to Gov. Ames by tho fol
lowing letter : " I herewith beg leavo
respectfully to tender my resignation as
Mayor of Florey ville, to which office I was
appointed by your high-headed predeces
sor, which, with the infornal greediness foi
4?ffl90 so characteristic of tho American
people, I was green enough to accept. In
thus drawing off trio judicial ermino I am
governed alone by the haunting of being
inordinately rich if I continue to hold this
lucrative position. Perhaps some other
man and brother may be inveigled into the
acceptance of this position, but your hum
ble servant prefers to retire to the gushing
serenity of private life."
A Singular Complaint.
Complaint is made of a filthy and dan
gerous practice, long prevalent in New
York City, of undertakers throwing un
melted ice, used for preserving the dead,
into the street. This is to bo stopped by
action of the Health officers, who attribute
a large percentage of death from conta
gious disease to children eating the ice,
and in many instances taking it borne to
their parents, who, unconscious of the use
having been made of ii, enjoy it as a lux
ury seldom experienced.
tiT" The performances of a circus-rider
in San Francisco received a queer compli
ment a short time ago. The performer,
whose name is Dockril), among other
things, appears in an Indian act on horse
back, in the course of which he leaps
down and scalps the clown of his wig. On
the particular evening referred to the au
dience included the band of Warm Spring
Indians who acted with the United States
forces in the Modoe war. At sight of this
familiar exploit, these ingenious savages
were quit unable to restrain their en
thusiasm.. They rose to their feet, drew
their scalping-knivcs, and with thoir ter
rific war-whoops were about to rush into
the ring to the aid of their pseudo-brother.
It was only with the utmost difliculty they
could be quieted down, and then they per
sisted in recalling again and again the
counterfeit savaga whoso performance had
so touched their sensibilities.
t3TDr. William Clough.an eccentric pby
aician of PitUfleld, Mass., died last week.
Ho rarely took an adequate fee, never
asked any pay of the poor, and his house
was made of marble boulders, which he
had taken of the farmers In lieu of fees,
while they were cut and laid by the labor
er whom he treated. As be grew older,
his peculiarities' grew upon him, and the
most striking features about his practice
was his repugnance to' receiving any re
muneration whatever for his sorvices.
